Hello all,

So, I have a contract to leave for RTC on 20080205 as an IS/E-3, but I am also interested in being a CTR or CTN. This job ratings were not available to me when I was sworn in at MEPS.

I am going to go talk with my recruiter today to see when CTR or CTN 'A' school dates are available and if there are any available around the same date as my 'A' school date, than I would like to change my job rating to CTR or CTN from IS.

Any suggestions, concerns, advice, opinions on this matter?

I know that a job rating change can be done in DEP status, but will the recruiter cry wolf because of the work involved?

Would this void my 20,000 sign on bonus that I received in my contract?

Thanks all for your help as usual.

Maybe, maybe not, but if you really want CTO. . .

That depends if the $20K was rate specific. If it was only for IS, then yeah, it will void it. If CTO has bonus for equal, less, or more, then you will have to reapply for it (especially if it's not equal).

I am quite torn though between the two jobs. In the civilian world I am an IT admin working on servers and all things geeky...so CTO was naturally one of my top choices...IS was a backup, but the more I am thinking about it the more interested I have become in wanting to go CTO.

If I have to stick out IS from the start...how long into my 8 year contract do I have to wait until I can change jobs?

Did somebody tell you that you could go in as CTO? The Navy doesn't have CTO's anymore. The only CT ratings are: CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, and CTT. I don't recall if they were merged on just done away with, but you can't join the Navy as a CTO.

Well this is interesting...my recruiter showed me a pamphlet for CTO when I first spoke to him before MEPS back in June.

I will have to see how my conversation with him tonight goes.

Thank you for the update though.

Would anyone know where I can find more information on: CTI, CTM, CTN, CTR, and CTT? I am interested in the ASVAB scores, duties, 'A' school, etc...

If you look at the left sidebar here, you see a list of the current CT ratings and you can click to learn more about what they do.

The CT community is constantly doing away with, merging, and creating new ratings. I can't remember exactly what happened with CTO's (and hubby's busy), but if you look at the detailer's page and the current advancement results, there is no mention of CTO's.

If my recruiter threatens me with a dishonorable discharge because I want to change my job, with me leaving for RTC on 20080205, how long would I have to stay in IS before I could cross rate to CTR or CTN?

I only ask this because when I had my ship date changed back in August, they threatened to give me a dishonorable discharge, which had no relevance at all.

I call shenanigans.

You also might want to check what's available in the Reserves vice Active. I'm not sure if all CT rates are open for non-prior Reservists.

Oh, and to answer your question, you'll need to wait for two years before you can cross-rate. And it's not automatic; if Navy has a greater need for you as an IS than as a CTR, you won't be allowed to cross-rate.

Ha well my friend I can tell you as an IS myself that there are only a handful of ways to get out of the IS rate:

1. Be a complete dumb@$s (which since you qualified you're obviously not)
2. Lose your clearance, and if you lose your clearance eligibility then you can't be a CT either, because they need it to.
3. Or get dropped from school.

Personally if I were you I'd stick with IS, although I am a little biased, at the end of my 6yr active duty contract, I can make nearly $80K a year.

And contractors are in big demand. and you can start out at like $70K or so with minimal training.

But the whole dishonorable discharge is BS.

Hey Gregory,

I think I am going to stay in the IS rate. It was one of my top choices and I guess I was a bit discouraged when I heard that no CT rates were available at the time of me picking my job rating.

I do have high hopes of working towards a Warrant Officer or higher someday in my time with the USNR. So, I am going to stick out the IS rating as planned.

Where did you get the information that you could potentially make 80K+ a year?

In my career now I make 65K+ and it's IT related work. So, a new career possibility would be nice Smile

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it.

I work in Washington, D.C. and it is very Contractor/Civilian Centric. Several of the gentlement I work with who have only recently got out are leaving their respective companies, for other firms. Many of them were E-5/6's when they left their respective services, and are making a fair bit of change.
