I was "seperated from my unit" in the Army in 2005 prior to shipping (Nov. 23 05) after popping hot on the DAT for THC(trace amounts). I didn't just wait the 90 days and retest because I feel in love and all that nonsense. I am now strongly considering enlisting in the Navy, but have heard that this prior positive result will automatically DQ me from the Navy. Is this true?

Also, I currently have sole custody of my 18 month old son and am giving custody to my mother. The father is abusive and has no custody of two children from a previous relationship. I have been told that giving up custody for the sole purpose of enlisting is an automatic DQ. Is this true?

I'm not set on a rating because I know that things don't work that way in the Navy, but do want to be in either admin or tech/computers somewhere. My credit isn't stellar and that will limit ratings(security clearances), but no other issues. I have great referances, 4.0 high school GPA, 3.887 College GPA in BUS ADMIN, physically fit, all other requirements are met. (tattoo that can be covered on back and ankle-waiver required maybe)

What do you mean: "seperated from my unit" ? Where you in the reserves or just DEP prior to going active. If you were in the reserves and had already attended bootcamp and waiting on AIT you are not eligible to join the Navy. No waivers. If in DEP you may get a waiver.

As for your child it is true that you cannot give up physical custody for the sole purpose of enlisting. Also you still retain a legal obligation for your child unless your mom adopts.

"Applicants who test positive for marijuana, cocaine or methamphetamine on their initial test are permanently barred from reprocessing for the Navy."

"Applicants with a previous MEPS positive DAT, regardless of service processing for, are permanently ineligible for enlisting in the Navy."

This might sound harsh, but now you know how doing illegal drugs can not only affect your health, but your professional prospects.

Why don't you try the Army again? Since they have more quotas to fill, they'll probably be forgiving and (hopefully) see that you've learned your lesson. The Navy isn't hurting too bad for new recruits. (Or did the Army say, you're done with them?)

Yeah, you have a good academic record and references. But all it takes is one screw up to foul up your record.

I was a Depper, so I hope that I can get a waiver.

As to custody, I'm giving it to my mom for my first enlistment. But now my question is: can they live on base as my dependents? Or do I only get to see him on leave? Or can I get a houseing allowance and live off base? This sucks.

OR I could just get married.....

As previously stated, a positive drug test at MEPS is permanently disqualifying for the Navy.

Stec and NCCM,
When did the Navy change policy on DATs?

OP,
YOu will NOT be able to get your child back during your first enlistment. Thus the reason you must sign over physical custody. You will only get single BAH if you are authorized to live in town.

They changed the policy around three years ago. Now the Army and USMC are the only two branches that will take someone with a positive DAT.

I see you're looking for an answer you WANT TO HEAR instead of reading what others have advised or looked up. Roll Eyes

If you can't get back in, oh well, too bad so sad. You just just have to learn to live with the consequences of your actions and press on with life.
