I am in DEP, and my recruiter isnt sure on how the corpsman process goes. I am a little confussed on how you pick your job? Are you able to choose if you would like to be with the marines or with the navy? Does anyone have any advice or an answer. I have been searching for this using find, and have yet to see anything.
Being female you are going to have a harder road to go if its FMF that you want. Not impossible from what I have read here from young female Docs and other AD types but a heck of a lot harder than if you were a male.
You go to Corps School and then fill out a wish list for the type of duty, coast, or school you want and then pray. (the wish list may be slightly different from that of my time but you get the idea)
As they say----"needs of the Navy". If the Navys needs and your desires match up you are in.
If not they will find you something else interesting to do.

In my day it would be Charlie Med that you would be interested in I would guess. The younger Docs here can tell you what those med-surgical units are like today and what your chances might be of scoring a gig like that.
Charlie Med was were WIA Marines ended up for the most part after they were evacuated out of the field where someone like myself would have attended to them first.
there are many specialties within the FMF side of the house, XRAY, OR tech, PMT, and many more,,but you either have that school out of the way first or after you go FMF and there a year, you can request the next school. YOu never loose FMF.
im currently in hospital corpschool now... as far as going greenside... if your male its pretty much a given that your going to go to fmss... but that doesnt mean you will go greenside... it just means you will be qualified to. as far as females go, yes it is possible for you to but right now fmss is soo backed up... even the males are getting put on hold for a few months so it is very difficult for females out of corps school to go UNLESS it is WRITTEN IN YOUR CONTRACT from meps... if you want something then make sure it is written in your contract other wise you will not get anything at all...

My husband is currently in corps school, and has mentioned that he may be placed "on hold" for 1-3 months upon completion. Can you tell what that means? Where are you on hold, and what do you do? I'm just curious when I might be able to live with him again... thank you for any help you can give!
hold consists of standing watches all day while everyone else is in class. he will be staying in the same room that he has been in and as far as when you will be able to live with him... it depends on if he has fmss school... if he doesnt go to fmss or a c school then you can probably live with him as soon as he gets out of here but if he has another school then you will probably have to wait until he gets out of school unless you decide to move wherever his school is. there are people that do that and i believe the policy is that if the school is longer then 6 months then dependents can live with the service member. fmss is only 8 weeks so that wont be an option there however a lot of c schools are 6+months... just talk to him, im sure he can give you more specifics then i can because he has more info on his situation then i do.
We've had Sailors report to the command TEMDU for period of time from 1-4 months, then go to FMSS, then report back to the command. So you dont always stay at great lakes standing watch and what not, sometimes you actually go to your permantent duty station for a small period of time then go to FMSS, and back to your permanent duty station.
Female Billets (slots) in FMSS have been at a premium for years (since they opened them) there are always Gung-ho females that want to test their metal with the marines. The Problem is getting one of those slots, as there aren't as many as there could be because they are only used to fill the "In the rear" billets with the marines and there aren't that many of them. Don't give up, I'm sure you'll get there, but as with the Navy most times, if you want it, you won't get it, and if you don't want it, it will be forced on you. Just React, Adapt and Overcome.
