Hey, I just have a somewhat simple question that I can't seem to find the answer to. I have a home school diploma, I was informed that I would need to score a 50 on the ASVAB to join the Navy. I've been physically preparing myself to become a SEAL for about a year now. I recently took the ASVAB with the Guard and I'm waiting to get my test results on monday. It was a rush sort of thing and I didn't really get a chance to study in the areas I needed to. My question is, if I score under a 50 on the ASVAB but my line scores are (GS)(MC)(EI)=165 or (VE)(MK)(MC)(CS)=220 or above will I still need the 50 to be considered or will my line scores be enough?
Also, how is the 165 or 220 calculated, do you just add the line scores of each sub-test together? If this has been discussed I apologize but my search didn't produce an exact answer, Thanks in advance for any help. |

My MK and GS are probably decent, I'm confident I knew the majority that was on the test. It's the AR that I was worried about. I was never a math wizz and I've almost never used fractions, multiplication, division in daily life for the past 6-7 years so a lot of it was fuzzy. when I took the Army EST that was the only thing that brought my score down. (41) Appreciate the image and your time sir. |

I consider that arithmetic, not math. Math is Algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, etc. At times I truggled with math, but when applied to what I did found it easy. Find a refresher course for basic high school arithmetic. Maybe one that focuses on something you like to do.

I was under the impression that Arithmetic is a sub-division of mathematics, just what I've been told, not trying to be combative. I agree on finding something that relates. Brushing up on AR isn't going to be a problem. I have Barron's ASVAB prep. book. I was just exploring other options than SEALS such as AF PJ's and Army SF, met with a Guard recruiter and he wanted me to test right away. My main concern on this board was the question; If I score under a 50 on the ASVAB having a Tier II education but I pass the sub-test requirements for a SEAL contract, will I have to still score 50% or better? I know this question can be easily answered by speaking with my recruiter, but I understand the demands of a recruiting position and I don't want to bother him with questions on his day off. Thank you for your advice sir. |

You are right on it is part of math, but it is the part we all use in every day life. I do use statistics in my work sometimes, mostly the basic ones, but I use arithmetic much more often.
There are a number of issues that come with home schooling. If you meet the criteria set by the Secretary of Defense for Home School graduation, then you would be a Tier 1 recruit. My reading of the material says that one of the issues they are concerned is those who are home schooled to graduation after they drop out of high school, and low scores by those home schooled. We have recruiters on this forum, and they can give you a snapshot of the rules in effect at this time for the recruiting of those home schooled. |
