Hey

I've been waiting to be discharged completely from the Navy DEP so I could transfer my paperwork over to the Coast Guard.

I went into my Navy's office a little over a month ago to tell them about wanting to switch. I then came on here to ask how the discharge process worked but I didn't completely understand what I was told.

1. Do I automatically get discharged on my ship date? (which was on the 1st week of June of this year)

2. Or does the discharge process just start after my ship date?

Because today I was told by my CG recruiter that I'm still in Navy DEP and she can't do anything until I'm out. Just wanted to clear this up so I could understand it.

If #2 is the correct one, then does anyone know the typical time it takes to completely release me from DEP?

Is there a way to speed up the process?

Thanks in advance.

Did you put that in writing and submit it to the recruiter? If you didn't do that then your still under contract to the Navy.

What is your DEP in date? Technically they can keep you in DEP until a year from that date. Usually the process does not start until after your ship date. The Navy office at MEPS (Normally) mails you a certified letter, you need to sign a copy and keep a copy, send the signed copy back to the Navy Office. They will then send your packet to MEPS who will then process your discharge. A lot depends on how long it takes the Navy office to mail your paperwork. However, as previously stated they can also keep you in DEP to 1 year past the date you originally joined.

You will be discharged when you are discharged.

First, YOU left your Navy recruiters with having to fill the hole that YOUR sorry butt ran away from. Don't be surprised if they take as long as they want to discharge you. You inconvenienced them, I think it is only fitting that they treat you the same way.

Second, you have posted on the USCG boards that you have already been speaking with the USCG recruiter and this recruiter has already been discussing school choices with you. If this is the case then your USCGrecruiter is in the wrong. No recruiterfrom any other branch of service is allowed to talk to you about joining their branch while you are in Navy DEP.

Because of this, if you were my DEPPER I would keep you under contract until the very last minute before discharging you. Most recruiters don't take kindly to being inconvenienced by a 20 year old kid and they really take offense to being "back doored" by another branches recruiter.

In the meantime, since you want to be in the USCG so bad, their message boards are that away.

Whoa before you go and take this personal, my recruiters were fine with me leaving Navy DEP. Also my CG recruiter even said that she didn't want to discuss anything until I was out of Navy DEP because it was "immoral to talk to people who were still obligated to other branches" or something to that line. I then told her that I was out because I thought I was officially out at the time, not knowing it was a long process.

Thanks william969, so even though my ship date passed (June 04, 2009) I am still committed for another year or until MEPS comes around to discharging me?

GerryRM3 - I faxed them a hand written letter stating my reason for leaving so they could give to their command I believe, and that was all they asked from me. Never signed anything for a discharge. When I called their office a week later asking if they had discharged me, they said they had sent the paperwork in for it to their command. That was it.

Guess your at the mercy of the burocracy then. I don't think its going to be real high on the priority list though, so patience is a must here.

As William stated they can keep you till a year from the date you signed for DEP, not your ship date as you put down.

Wow I was hoping that wasn't the case, but at least I know for sure now.

Can contacting up the chain of command or having my CG recruiter contact anyone help speed up the process?

The CG recruiter should stand down completely.

If they don't and someone higher in the Navy recruiting command contacts someone higher in the CG recruiting command........OOPS!

Somehow your missing whats being said here by what you put down.
The Coast Guard recruiter is not going to deal with you until you have your release from the Navy, that means even to contact the Navy recruiter. Its unethical and she won't do it for professial reasons. Your going to have to wait. Get used to waiting as its a military trademark.

I would like to say that I don't see the problem with you wanting to change branches. It's your career and your life. If you think the CG fits you better, then go for it and good luck. Yes, you will need a letter and they can take as long as they want up until your ship date, but if the CG will take you, then just wait it out if the Navy office won't help you out. Don't let the fact that the Navy has the option of dragging their feet to deter you. I in no way take it personally if you would rather be in another branch. Nor, do I think anyone else should. Good luck and do whatever you have to.

Let me be crystal clear here. I could give a crap if the OP wants to change branches. What I do give a crap about is how the OP feels like he is being inconvenienced by the Navy in his pursuit of joining the USCG.

This quote was from a post the OP made a few weeks back about his situation:

The title of his post was "Getting out of Navy DEP - Am I getting screwed?"

quote:
If this is my Navy recruiter's fault, its cutting into my enlisting and processing time for the USCG, which I want to get done ASAP so I could possibly ship sooner.

Stec I think its called instantaneous gratification. Its enhanced with the computer age and cell phones. People under 35 seem to be afflicted with the virus more than those of us over 60. We're called old farts. Your going to get there sometime. Cool

Applause

And that is just one comment of his about how the Navy is supposedly doing him harm.

When I wrote:

I was assuming that my Navy recruiter was being shady and telling me that he had sent in my discharge paperwork just to blow me off, when he had in fact not sent in any kind of notice to his recruiting command of my request for a discharge.

Thanks for the other responses. Guess I'll have to wait it out.
