Ok, so I depped in 20090930 as a nuke, and submitted a DAR the same day to ship early because as of right now I don't ship until 20100601. I haven't heard anything from anyone since then and I'm trying desperately to find a civilian job in the meantime. The problem is that I have a wife and 2 kids (therefore, bills to pay) and I need to ship out soon.

And before anyone says it, I am not joining to solve financial issues. I have a very long list of family that has served and this is something I have wanted to do since I was a child.

My questions are: 1. Is there any way to get the DAR sped up? Anyone I can write to/talk to/beg/etc?

2. When looking for a job, do I have to tell my potential employers that I'm leaving June 1st? Because if I were the employer, I wouldn't want to hire someone if I knew they were leaving. However as I said before, I have a wife and 2 kids, so I have to work.

Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to get a straight answer out of my recruiter so this is pretty much "what I got". Thanks in advance!

Right now the Navy and military in general is not hurting for people, including nukes. The reason you have a ship date is because that is when there should be a class starting shortly after you finish boot. The only way for you to move up is if someone else drops out...and then it probably goes by other people like who who requested first. I can't say for sure on that, but reality is there is really noone out there that you can beg, plead, and cry to to get in any earlier. Sometimes you have to wait for the paperwork monster to works its course and it really doesn't care about personal issues.

As for looking for a job, no, you don't have to tell a potential employer you are leaving in June, it is up to you if you do. Thing is though there are part time and not so glamorous types of jobs out there that may not pay great, but is still a job, perhaps you should be looking at something like that. Work a few part time jobs if needed vs looking for some great FT job which you will leave in June anyway. Christmas is also around the corner and you may see some opportunities for temp jobs for awhile too. In the end, a paycheck is a paycheck, if you have to flip burgers, so be it, if you have to stock shelves, so be it. If I was in your position, that is what I would do, I would take on several PT jobs.

As for your recruiter, if you sent in the paperwork, then there is really not much more he can do either. He still has a job to do as well and has other recruits to look out for too, there isn't the time to spend and worry about your DAR because you want to ship earlier. Paperwork can be very slow in the military and that is just how it is, saying you can't get a straight answer out of your recruiter doesn't help, he did his job.

The Navy is ALWAYS hurting for Nukes. This is why the SRB and Enlistment bonus' haven't gone away.

SRBs went away for a few months this year for nukes, actually.

That may well be true but since MA is the second largest rating in the Navy hence maybe more people not shipping, so someone like you may get an earlier ship date and in this case has NOTHING to do with the NF and if someone in the NF may have a DAR for an earlier ship date getting approved.
