Okay so heres the deal.... I got out in July of this year after 4 years as an IT2. Long story short I want back in but I want to come in as a diver....I've talked to both the recruiter and SO coordinater. The recruiter is telling m I can re-enlist but I can't have my choice of job (unless I choose EOD, SEAL, SWCC or Diver) The SO coordinater tells me I have to DEP in first and have some other rate chosen (not ND) and then take the PT test. If I pass my PT test than the basically shred my old contract and I get a new on guarenteeing me my dive school.

Now I have a few questions. Will I have to retake the ASVAB? Also I'm okay with enlisting under a different rate and then doing the PT thing for diver. But if I do that I would want my old IT rating.. That way incase something happens at dive school I am an IT again and not something else..... Anyone have any sort of light they can shed on this issue. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ryan

You should not have to retake the ASVAB (if I'm wrong then one of the recruiters will correct me). If you Google the ND qualifications (or do a search because I posted something about this within the last two weeks), you will see that you can cross-rate to ND after passing PT and then doing the other stuff.

You're fastest way back in and being productive may well be to go back as an IT and then applying for ND.

okay but the recruiter is telling me that I cannot pick my rate. I will be put into an undermanned rate if I decide to come back in... And I don't want to be an IT or anything but a diver.

So which is it?

Since you are the one wanting back in you will accept what ever RATING they will let you have prior to qualifying for ND.

Once back on active duty if you fail to complete any phase of ND training they can put you into a rating, that you qualify for, where the Navy's need is most great, and that might not be the one your signed up for prior to qualifying for ND or IT.

As a NAVET you do not go into DEP. You will likely have to retake the ASVAB to determine qualifications for a new rating. The only time you don't have to retake is if you are coming back in the original rating/rate. You may also have to accept admin reduction to E4, not sure and will depend on the ECM for the rating you request approving you as E5.

That's not entirely true. I'm a NAVET processing back in, and I had to retake the ASVAB because I'd been out longer than 18 months, regardless of what rate I wanted. I've been on DEP since 28OCT2008. I ship on 20JAN2009. My recruiters are cool, so they don't make me come to the DEP meetings and PT with the kids (my physical readiness is still strong, and way above theirs), so I just have to call weekly to check-in and come to the station monthly to update my paperwork.

Good luck, shipmate!

It is 100% true. That is why you aren't required to come to the DEP meetings, PT, ETC.

DEP is for new recruits only. In fact, the Recruiting Manual says that even if you have one day of prior service, you are not reenlisted into the Delayed Entry Program.

Stec,

Don't they have another term for the "Priors", such as DER (Delayed Reservation status) or some such term?
But of course NOT DEP.

Correct.

DER = Direct Enlistment Reservation Program

Thank you.
I knew there was a term for it but just could not remember the correct wording for DER.

Not to go too far off topic here, but why don't you wish to return as IT? Did you not like the rating? Or just ready for something different?
