The gym at Dam Neck was okay the last time I was stationed there (about 8 years ago). Not the best I've seen on a Navy base, but not the worst either. They've got a decent amount of free weights, and an okay selection of machines. There were plans to improve the gym since I was last there.

It didn't have the greatest selection of cardio equipment when I was there, but as I said, there were plans to improve the gym, so that may have changed as well.

I really liked the pool there. Indoor 50 meter pool, can't remember if it is 6 or 8 lanes wide.

I'll point out the obvious. You won't be able to go to the gym until after your class requirements have been satisfied for the day. Unless your class runs at night, in which case you should be allowed to go during the day. You might not be allowed to go to the gym on days where you have duty in the barracks, which could be as often as one-in-three. This will depend on the current barracks policy, your Duty Section Leader in the barracks, the staff member that has duty supervising in the barracks on a particular day, the price of tea in China, the alignment of the planets, etc...

I was on Dam Neck this past year twice for training. I stayed at the CBQ, and for the most part Dam Neck is a small Navy Annex Base to Oceana right down the street. There really isnt much of anything to do On Base after 1600. I am not sure how "A" School works there, but I saw alot of sailors in uniform after 1600, assumed they were on watch or duty.

This area is called Hampton Roads and it is full of Military Instilation, and you could easily find a base with a gym, but your transportation from one base to the other is limited by the shuttle and taxi services, since you can't have a car while in A School,( at least that was the rules when I was in school). The base is in a small little isolated area of Virginia Beach. It is very close to NAS Oceana, and I am sure you can find more to do on NAS.

On a scale of 1-10, I would rate Dam Neck as a 4. The place seems to be forgotten, even though it is main schooling site for most of the Fleet. I just been to other Navy Bases that seem to be better kept, and "modernized".

I feel that if the Navy would give more for the young sailors to do on base or after hours, less would be getting into trouble. Thats the main problem with Norfolk and Hampton Roads in general, there isnt much to do for a young single sailor, and the Navy doesnt really do much for a bored Single Sailor and thats when Bad things start to happen.

ONE major word of advice, DO NOT buy a CAR without first talking it over with LEGAL, when you are able to purchase a vehicle down there. The dealerships will get you into contracts with up to and exceeding 30-40% APR's! Just watch out down there. If you have the opportunity to go somewhere else when you join the "Fleet" go overseas. That is where you really feel like you joined the Navy for a reason.

Dam Neck is in Virginia Beach, the largest and highest per capita income in all of Virginia. We also have dozens of bases. You should not have an issue finding gyms, supplements, etc.

Oceana has a great gym if you can get over there. Had some friends that were stationed at Dam Neck and they worked out at Oceana, as well.

Seconded. It's only 10 or 15 minutes by car from Dam Neck to Oceana.
