Hello all,
I have some questions concerning the IS rate. Where are IS's currently deployed? Are the sea duties better than the shore duties? Is it possible to work with an aircrew duty? I am going to be stationed at Fort Dix, NJ. Does anyone know what type of duties an IS would perform here, especially being next to mcguire air force base. I am really looking forward to being an IS, but would really love to know if anyone has any advice on how to obtain good duties. Now, even though I am going in as a reservist, I still want to have the great quality experience that active duty has. |

IS's (reserve and active) are deployed around the world - on ships, on land, with ground forces in Afghanistan, Iraq, and miscellaneous other locations. I've seen IS's attached to aviation wings, but not as Air Crew....that does not mean it's impossible...but, if available, would likely be a route an active duty IS could pursue. Your duties will depend on the Reserve Unit you are assigned to after completing RTC and A School. Some one at your supporting NOSC will put in and open billet for one of the intel units at Fort Dix. Experience in the reserve and active components is not going to be the same. As you become more experienced as a reserve IS, you should have opportunities to volunteer for active duty orders (any where from 2 weeks to a year or more) that can offer some AD experience. Just a few quick answers (I'm not Navy but I teach at the CTR A School) Commonly deployed? From what I've gathered from talking with my Navy colleagues, they're pretty much everywhere. I know quite a few that were offshore in the Gulf and others that have been stationed in Qatar and other places. I also know quite a few that have deployed IA to Army units in Iraq (a good friend of mine is there now). I also know many that are aircrew (on EP-3's), so that would be a yes. Most of the Sailors I work with seem to think that you should go to sea at least once. As for suggestions? Well, (1) make sure you have good study habits when you get here, (2) don't party too much while you're here and most of all, keep a good attitude and pay attention in class. |

Most CTR got stationed at a shore command in a Direct Support billet meaning you are augmented to ships or other locations depending on qualifications. I had friends when I was active duty that would be out to sea on a ship more than the people stationed on a ship or sub or part of a aircrew. One of them was out to sea 332 days out of 1 year... Now thats alot of sea time.
