I have done some research on the SEABEEs but I had a few questions. 1.Do SEABEEs get deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq often? If so which country do they get deployed to more? 2. Since SEABEEs have combat training with the Marine Corps do they ever go into combat or go on combat missions with the Marines. 3. What is the Sea/Shore rotation for SEABEEs?

Let me just say this about that...
I was sired by one of the origional SLEEZEbees. He was not always a Nice person, but he was in fact one the Greatest Men that ever drew breath on Gods green earth!!!! Lad, its not about badges, ribbons, Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, or WWtwice. Its not about going to sea or not going to sea, and its for sure NOT about being a "Warrior" If I never learned one thing else from my Father, it was that being a "Fighting SleezeBee????" was about "BUILDING THINGS!!!!!!!" Just my two euro's worth.................... |

Nice one river rat! I understand all of those things and if I wanted to just fight I would have joined the Army or Marine Corps infantry. But the SEABEEs motto is We Build We Fight so it would be a little misleading if they didn't fight. You know what I mean? Anymore direct info would be great thanks.

From a post I did about a month ago. Give you a little taste. And yes, for what it's worth, 'We build, we fight" means just that. You may be one of the guys that does one or the other. I personally have never built anything, but that has been my choice. I have always been teh guy that has volunteered to go get the Marine combat training, and come back and build the security teams. Liek Gerry said, yu can wade through these boards and find a lot of different thigns about the 'Bees.
It seems we have young posters wanting to know about life in the Navy alot lately, and some have asked about Iraq. Well, I couldn't tell you th efirst thing about one of the big, floaty things, but I will weigh in on life in Iraq, as I know it. We always tell the young 'uns to look before they ask, adn there really isn't anything on this forum, that addresses that, so here I go. This may be long, as I'm just going to ramble a little. I was deployed to Iraq in March 2003, in a NMCB heavy Air-Det (125 people) as an EO2. 17 days of pre-mob training in PH, CA, was all we got. We didn't even have a mission, when we took off. WE spent a week in Kuwait(hot & sucks waiting for the other shoe to drop). Our LT (OIC), took about 20 guys with him, and flew to Bagdhad, in search of a mission. The rest of us, convoyed for 10 hours to Camp Davisville. Imagine the worst, dustiest conditions, and that's Davisville, or Dusterville as we called it. We sat there for a week, doing nothing, but smoking & joking, waiting to hear from our OIC. The AOIC (LTJG), was getting very nervous. Finally we heard from them, and drove further north to Babylon. Yes, the same Babylon from teh bible, right outside the town of Al Hillah. There was a small contingent of Marines there. There was also one of Saddams many palaces. One that his son Uday used, almost exclusively. It was right next to the Euphrates River canal. There was a little village across the river, so our mortar team, set up right across from them. On a side note, once we got to know the villagers, they told us of stories of how Uday, would send his men into the village, and bring back young girls, who he would then beat, rape, kill, and throw in the river. One of our interpretors, had massive whipping scars on his back, and broken fingers, he had gotten, when he tried to stop them from taking his daughter. Anyway, most of our det, was in charge of making Camp Babylon a secure and viable base. And they did a great job. We made teh Navy tTimes,a dn several DOD articels were put out on teh great job the ydid. I say they, as I can't build a birdhouse. Because I was on convoy/project security. We had set up soem CAT (civil action teams), to go into the nearby towns, and work on the local infrastructure. 7 schools, 2 water treatment plants were done, with the help, later, of local Iraqis. I was in charge, of laying out all routes to and from the sites, adn the secuirty there as well. Soon, we had so much going on, we had to stand up 2 more gun teams, as we called them. This was in 2003, we had 2 humvees per team. We gunners stood, in teh back of an open pickup type humvee, behind a homemade gun mount. We started getting further missions away. We started taking Army/Marine engineers to Al Kut, Nasariyah, Diwaneyah, adn we were teh first Seabees to go as far north as Tikrit(the hot spot at the time). As far as camp life for us, about 100 of us, slept together on cots in an old storage shed., WE had a mortar team that slept with their guns on the line, and a small security team, that slept near the equipment, right on the fence line. Chow was MRE's, abou t1/2 through, then they had an actual chow hall, which was nothing more then T-rats, which is just big MRE's. We went to the bathroom, in 4 hole burn-outs, which is a ply-wood outhouse, with 50 gal. barrels, cut in 1/2 to go in. The fun thing is it is open, and everyone walking by, can see you sitting htere doing your business. I used to wave to them, lol. We also, discovered, and ending up excavating the first mass grave found over there. North of Al Hillah. Digging up bodies, many of them, small children, with scraps of rope around their legs and arms, si not a lot of fun. And pulling security with 16 guys, when there are 2,000 screaming, crying Hadjis milling around, looking for their loved ones, was scary as hell. Amnesty International even came in and did a story on it, and a buddy back here at home saw my great "No Comment, get the hell out of here!", when FOX news stuck a mike in my face, lol. I see I am getting a little long winded(the first time that ever happened, lol), so I will post this. I will post my second tour if anyone is interested. This has actually been kind of catharcic. Thanks for reading. |

Hi again everybody, I've been looking into the SEABEEs with the find feature and have learned a few new things. In a post I read today someone said the Coast Guard fires more ammo than the average sailor, is this true? Also when you get SEABEE as a job do you get to pick exactly what job you want such a BU or CE or is it more just the needs of the Navy? Also feel free to further answer my previous questions everybody. And Billdawg write your second tour on the post the first one was pretty awesome in my opinion.

Cheese and rice kid, what information do you want to know? Your questions are quite vague and are tough to answer. Where does a SEABEE get deployed more? You could be in a unit and not go to either Iraq or Afghanistan. Does the CG fire more ammo than the average sailor?...Yes, the entire Coast Guard will fire more ammo than the average Navy sailor. Sea/shore rotation is going to vary on what rating you go into. You see you do not go into the SEABEEs and pick a job, you test first to see if you qualify for the job, then you find out if the job is available. Just because you want to be in a CB unit means you will qualify for it. Finally, is Billdawg supposed to be your personal story teller? You said you used the FIND feature, but yet you maintain your original questions, you have had some information, but maintain vague questions. If you want better answers, ask more specific questions. |

Jeez DC2crabby lighten up! Thanks though
My newest questions were just the result of using the find feature reading posts and just getting a little more confused. So I guess I'm sorry about the even more vague questions. Okay this question is still vague but less vague in my opinion (these things just come to mind as I write |

What friggin difference does it make? You will go from any component of the Navy to anywhere they decide, when they decide to send you, stay as long as they decide, and do any thing they say to do. And that applies to ALL ratings. It appears that you,as of yet, don't even know how to go about maybe getting a chance to try for one of the ratings within the CB's, yet you are worried about where they might go. Take it one step at a time. First see if you can even qualify to enter the Navy by doing all the things necessary to accomplish that goal first. Then see if you gualify for one of the CB ratings and if there is even an open slot for the one you want. If no opening you may need to select one that does have openings. If that opening does not meet your supposed requirements....pack it up and go home. If you had bothered to look at the captions of the pictures in the link I provided you would have seen just some of the locations that a CB can be sent, either for training or actual deployment.
