My recruiter is suggesting that I try and become a nuk. Since my practice asvab score was excellent and he had total confidence. As I do research, there is over a year of school; three different sessions. My recruiter didn't know the question. I know my wife couldn't move during A-School, would we have to wait that year or would she be able to move during the other schooling? Thank you very much.

Nukes can move their spouses to A school, C school and prototype. Just don't let her distract you from school

If you're looking for more information about nuke, search for posts by Catherine. She has written extensively on this subject and is a former nuke instructor.

If your ASVAB/NFQT will support it ET/RO would be the choice to try and get.

He really doesn't have an option on what rate, unless he requests MM. Otherwise, it's luck of the draw and needs of the Navy. It's assigned at boot

In the end, being a nuke trumps rating anyway.

Actually, any of the rates is OK. If the poster is looking at 6 and out, the civilian plants treat RO differently...you have a looonnnnggg school (talking 14-16 months) before you take an NRC approved test. The civilians do not care what your navy job was...I currently work with two ex electricians, an ex ET and an ex-mechanic. Throw into that mix a marine (from what he says, there is no such thing as an "ex-marine"), and you get an interesting cross section.

Correct me if I am wrong but even to this day is it not the case that title wise ET=Reactor Operator IE RO and MM=Mechanical Operator and EM=Electrical operator and in the heirarchy of things RO's are still the top of the food chain?

Why do only MM's get to pick?

Back in the day what you got or more accuratley was eligible for was determined by NFQT the highest scoring requirement was for ET's/RO's it was a sliding scale and MM was actually the lowest.

The school in Orlando at the time was the same lenght but but protype in ID it depended on what type "operator" you were.

Yes I came in for NF it was back when you went to what ever rates A school which was a fatal error on their part, being a Suface ET just sounded way more like fun and like a lot less work!

Do a little PMS every once in a while, stand no underway watches and play Risk and Monopoly while running SITE-TV or do 6&6 in an engine room forever.

I don't regret the change.

To the point of 6 and out to civilan industry it would seem having the title "reactor operator" for X years on your resume would be better than anything else.

Because they need so many of them and the job is so unglamorous that the Navy could never possibly get too many volunteers and provided you're qualified to be a nuke, you're qualified to be an MM and anyways they can't put all their high scoring nukes into ET because, damnit, a nuke is a nuke and we've got to have some shining stars turning wrenches. That was one hell of a run on.

From what I've read on the forum at another website(not going to plug), the upper management at one guys plant is filled with EM's and MM's and only had 1 ET in there out of about 8 positions. That's just one plant, but somewhat makes sense. Anyways, leave for boot in 6 days, then off to Charleston! Keep the forum kickin'! Ya'll do a badass job!

LOL it was, but made the point!

ETCPJ, a civilian plant doesnt care about rating because Navy RO does not translate to civilian RO. All nukes learn reactor theory and operation, and all a civilian plant cares about is that you have a proven ability to learn the material and a background exposure to it. Advanced watchstations (EWS, EDPO, EOOW, EDO) look even better, but those can be qualified by any rating.

MMs can also become ELTs, not just mechanical operators.

I take great offense to the notion that ET's are the top of the food chain. How do you suppose that? I mean sure, if the EOOW is incapacitated by a rogue torpedo piercing the hull and not exploding or resulting in flooding and nobody else in maneuvering is injrued, the RO is in charge until the EWS arrives on scene, but that doesn't necessarily make him the top of the food chain.

No one rate could do their job without the other two, we just all achieve our goals in different ways.
