There is no such thing as the "best".
It is what you make of it. |

There is no place fun stateside especially on the East Coast. To much brass walking around.
Find yourself a nice overseas base like Souda Bay where the mediteranean breezes are gentle and the lifestyle relaxed. I'de put in for that or Rota, Spain in a heartbeat. Just remember when you do put in for either of those your automaticaly assigned to a carrier in Norfolk that just started its drydock period for two years. USS Liberty, Never Forget. Groton wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the year I spent up there. But I enjoyed San Deigo and Hawaii much more.

Things have changed too much for me comment on how it is today.
However thats never stopped from jackin my jaws about "back in the day." Back around the mid 20th century, Vallejo, Ca. (Mare Island) was GREAT. |

I read in the paper today that Pearl Harbor and Hickham are going to become one base. Not sure how that is going to work.

WOW, I have never heard Nightmare island and Great in the same sentence before, but i guess whatever floats your boat. I don't know where the "Best" base is either, but i do know that the East coast has too many ZERO's fresh out of officer training school for my tastes. The west coast has always been perceived as being more laid back than the east coast. Does that make the west coast better? No not really just more fun i think. I was stationed at Naval Station San Diego (on the wet side) in the early 90's and loved it there. Tijuana Mex is just but a trolly ride away, unless they make it off limits, which they do from time to time. I've been to hawaii a few times and think that would also be a good place, I've had buddies who were stations in Japan and they seemed to like it there too. I guess it just really depends on what you are looking for and what your rate is. What base is best for you might not be what is best for me. Good Luck "Strike Hard Strike Home" |

I am going to say Washington D.C.. Before everyone goes ballistic, the eligible female to male ratio there is 10 to 1. Of course, no sea duty in DC, for that I would say Mayport on the right coast, San Diego and the Seattle area on the left coast.

If you say so Why. I lived in DC for 3 years after I got out of the Navy. Dating for me sucked there. Plus all the crime and murders. And that is just in Congress.

LOL - as for your question about combining different service's bases, I was just through Mcchord AFB a few weeks ago and they are in the last stages of merging with Ft. Lewis. They sit down and hammer out shared responsibility, put it all together in a memo of understanding, and then it goes to DOD for approval. Alternate COs, one AF, next Army, etc. all the way down the line. Saves a lot of people when functions are combined into a more streamlined command structure.

Your going to have to reasses that figure. Half of those females are cross dressers and the other half are congressmens mistreses. USS Liberty, Never Forget. I believe in Murrays Law, he thought Murphy was an optimist. |

BS Gerry - you obviously have never been in DC when the "corn feds" show up every June. These are the HS Grads that leave home for the first time and come to the big city for fame, fortune, and a husband. No cross dressers or mistresses in that bunch.

The two best places in the Navy have always been the place you just came from and the place you're about to go to.....I thought everybody knew that.

Has anyone got an interesting story or information about any Naval Air Stations they've been stationed to? Since I'm enlisted as AC, I'm only guessing that NAS is where I will be put, aside from an air craft carrier.

LOL... the ONLY guy on this thread to get it right. So to answer the INTENT of the OPs original question. It's all subjective, and totally personal opinion. You know what they say about opinions, right? So with that in mind. On the East Coast I liked Charleston. It was a cool city, with nice beaches (and beach bunnies) not too far away. The down town area is the only downtown in the US I've found that I'd actually want to live in. On the West Coast, Bangor. WA is beautiful. I liked it so much that I stayed after I got out. Fishing, hiking, mountains, sea... great fun. |
