Hi,

I have a question. I have been seeing a psychologist due to some depression problems and to make a long story short, I do not think now is the time for me to join. I am just not ready and would like out. I signed a contract already at MEPS and I am scheduled to ship in august. I searched and found I need to write a letter to my recruiter/commanding officer and give them a reason, but that it is still possible and legal for me to do so. Is there any truth to this? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, you can request a DEP discharge. Nowadays, since the job market sucks now, they shouldn't even try to talk you out of it. There will be lots of people wanting your billet (position).
Just curious what rating are you freeing up?

Send the letter to your recruiter with a summary of your diagnosis and treatment to your recruiter. That way he can submit your medical records and ensure that you are medically DQ'd for now. He should then forward your letter to the CO. You can also send a copy to the CO of the recruiting district for your area.

Just curious. How do you think this might affect this person should he/she decide to try and join again later?

We all know the Navy can never ever find the records/paperwork when WE need it, but they never EVER misplace or lose track of ANYTHING that could hinder or harm US!!!!!! Eek

Just understand that if/when you decide that you're ready later on down the road that it will be harder for you to DEP again.

Democracy will survive until the government figures out it can bribe the people with their own money.

It's better that than him ignoring the depression, esp if it's severe

Concur. He needs to get his issues addressed before he comes in. Otherwise, he may be setting himself up for failure, as well as creating an issue for his chain of command they don't need.
