I'm getting married before I go to basic training. I know that the NAVY won't pay to have her moved up, but my question is: How much time will I be able to spend with her if I pay to have her moved up?

I know that A School is a lot more relaxed than basic training, but I was wondering if it is so lax that I can be able to go off base to spend, even if it's just a few hours, with my wife.

RP "A" School is a self paced course. So you might be there for 1 week...or you might be there for a month or longer. It depends on how fast you work.

You will have different phases of liberty while in "A" School.

Phase 1: You are allowed off base but you must stay in uniform and be back by 2200.

Phase 2: Off base in civies but back on base by 2200. (i think)

Phase 3: Off base in civies overnight.

My advice.....don't move your family until you get to your first duty station.

FYI not only will the Navy NOT pay to move your wife to Aschool, but if you move her there they will NOT pay to move her from there to your first PDS. They pay based on where she should be. BAH will be based on where she should be as well.

I finished "A" School in about 2 weeks but was held by Holding Company for a couple of weeks until I received orders. There were some others in my class that took about a month to finish.

Thanks catherine and Freak.

Can you tell me what to expect with the A school. If there's anything I can brush up on/learn, I'd love to do so before hand. Thanks.

personally, I don't feel like I learned a whole lot in "A" School. My first command taught me a lot about the RP rate.

i'm an sk so i'm currently in meridian right now waiting on orders. rp's are here too. i know a few of them are also stuck here waiting on orders. she was right about the liberty phases but it would probably be better for your wife to move in because your not here all that long even though it feels like forever and a day because mississippi sucks. she could stay in the cbq's on base for like 20 dollars a day i believe and you could see her everyday as long as your not on duty, i knew a guy who had his wife here. any questions on meridian? just ask, i'm here

hey, sorry to hijack this thread, but i just signed up for this rate and have some questions. Like what is a typical day like? How does the process work of getting paired up with a chaplain or where you will be? Do you have any choice if you want to go to Iraq or not? Also, do we drive the chaplain everywhere? thanks!

When are you shipping out? I want to ship in late January, and I don't really want to wait until April.

i know what the typical day is like in a school for rp's. PT at 630 mon wed thurs, computer based classes until 11, lunch till 12 then class till 1545 then if you have duty, you muster and do duty, if not then liberty. thats mon-fri in meridian. sounds fun doesn't it?

They PT in the morning now? We did it after classes Mon Wed and Fri.

Richard,

A typical day in "A" School is just like Miraglia described. Out in the fleet though...it varies from day to day. One day you might be setting up the library, and the next day you might be leading a community relations project.

In regards to pairing with Chaplains....the Navy just sends you to a command and whoever's there is who you will work with.

You can request to go FMF (which I HIGHLY recommend) and if that unit deploys to Iraq or Afghanistan, you will go with them.
