As some of you already know, I have been working on applying for the NUPOC program. Last time I posted I had just gone to MEPS so I thought I'd give an update since there have been some new developments and I also have some new questions.
I was originally DQ'ed by MEPS before even going there due to some medical history stuff. Then I got the okay to go to MEPS (actually had to go twice because I had to take the MMPI). After all that I got DQ'ed again. My recruiter told me not to worry about it because the Navy people would decide if I was okay to go or not, not MEPS. Then I sat and waited for about 2 weeks without hearing anything. Then all of the sudden my recruiter called and said they wanted me to go to DC for the June 25th interviews. I had not been cleared by medical yet, but they were just going to ignore that for now and interview me anyway because they wanted to get me in to OCS right away so I could complete OCS before getting married in November as opposed to going to OCS after getting married. My recruiter and I both agreed this would be a bad idea since I had not had a chance to study for the interviews yet and at that point they were less than a week away. That whole situation has seemed a bit strange to me. How can they bring me to DC to interview before getting cleared by medical? That would potentially create a situation where they swore me in and then have me not get cleared (what would happen then?). I have also not done my PFT yet. Are they just getting desperate to fill numbers before the fiscal year ends? It looks like on the NUPOC blog they only need 6 more sub people for FY09. Anyone have any thoughts on this situation? |

FY 09 slots are for those who can leave now. Most (like the OC's and MECPS that interviewed today) wont leave for a while. As far as you going to DC before you clear med, yes, they can do it. They can either write a condidtional contract (one dependent on you passing medical-a process that may go faster if NR is involved) or they can prep a contract to send to your recruiter once you clear medical. They can get you a power school class start date (which you have some input on) but they wont pay the bonus until you sign fully. Have you done the phone interview yet? They've started on-the-phone technical interviews NUPOCs...so you could very well pick a date and have it pushed back 3 times (like a guy here had happen) because they wont send you to meet Adm Donald until they are confident in your abilities. |

May just be a regional thing, not sure. But I am sure a few guys in this region had to do them, and it is a very recent development. Totally schocked them and the recruiter who had no idea it would happen. Led to a few last-minute cancellations on the trip to DC. I feel bad for them. Its hard to explain how to derive the equation for the area of a circle over the phone. OCs do not have to do the phone interview, though. |

Well the email I received officially inviting me to the June 25th interviews said this:
But I will be waiting until probably October to go to the DC interviews (my availability to start OCS is mid November as discussed in previous threads) so I probably won't be dealing with the phone interview until closer to then. |
