Is it boring? Would I have to know alot of math. What all is great about this specific rating? Yes i have done the search as well as checked out about.com for the job description, but anyother personal experiences would help tremendously!
Thanks

QM was an inside rating, mostly bridge watches, chart maintenance, bridge area maintenance, etc. SM was merged with QM a few years ago, and that part of the rating was outside, using different methods of visual signalling - mostly flags, signal lights and semaphore. Most of the QM/SMs that I knew liked their rating and it has always been high in the enlisted precedence scheme.

Good rating? Boring?...both personal perspectives and neither of which you would be able to understand unless you did the job yourself.

Every rating has good points, every rating has bad. Some times can be active and exciting some can be spent in boredom....goes for ALL ratings.

QM is a fine rating to strike for buckeye. It is a time honored member of the basic seamanship ratings and carries fun, traditional duties which stretch back into history. One of those is being a boat coxwain. I spent most of my career in small boats and enjoyed every minute spent at the wheel.

Fair Winds!

Do they even have QM's anymore? I know they no longer exist on Submarines.

You may want to discuss with your recruiter the availability of rates. The Navy has clamped down it's recruiting in the last couple weeks and it doesn't sound like they will be pressing the reset button at the start of the fiscal year(October 1).
