So i took the ASVAB today got an 85 on the ASVAB and prequalified for NUKE. I did not meet the grade requirements in Highschool. I have a few and c's d's in math. How ever I showed commitment by signing on for 6 years as an AECF. They say I can get a waver. I am doing much beter this year. I got a B in AP phyichs class, and a D in FST (the class is a joke the teacher is an ass). I have a 3.2 GPA this year. I will most likely get an a in A FST and a B in AP Physichs. Basically MEPS says they will try to get me a Waver. How possible is this?
Thanks in advance you guys |

This belongs in the joining forum. It will be moving there.
how can you get an A in physics if you can't spell it? What is FST? What did you get in Algebra? |

A note to all posting around here. I know it may seem to be nit picking but spelling is important when you post here. Text spelling will get you jumped on around here. Spelling and proper english does matter when you fill out logs and paperwork in the Navy.
Ok stepping down from my soapbox. I stand corrected. Dang fingers. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mpwimmer, |

What is FST?
Regarding your teacher "being an ass"... well I'm sure there will be instructors in Nuke school you don't see eye to eye with either but that does not present an excuse to do poorly, lest ye wish to drop out and become a deckape. There's always a head that needs a good cleanin' somewhere But best of luck to you, sir. This message has been edited. Last edited by: CryptoDepper, |

Your chances of getting a waiver for bad grades are so so. It really depends on the whim of Naval Reactors. The Gods of Nuclear Power may shine their grace uppon you... or they might not. Depends on the alignment of the stars in relation to the house of Capricorn, and the channeling of the spirit of Adm. Rickover.
And the other Nub what posted about not liking your instructors being an excuse... well he's spot on. In NPS, or NFAS for that matter, and Prototype even MORE SO, it's NOT an acceptable excuse. You pass or fail on your own merit and standing. You either work hard, or you get kicked out. Simple as that. |

Oh yea one more thing: You do not have to call me Petty Officer. That is the way they address each other on a Target. Plus I am no longer in the Navy.

FST Fractions Stats Trig. - A class offered to seniors in High school who do are not interested/too dumb to take Pre-Calc.
I do not think I am challenged enough so I do not care about FST. The instructor gave me a D I have recently switched to another instructor and now have an A. Past record Algebra Q.1 C Q.2 D Geometry Q.1 B Q.2 C ALG 2 Q.1 D Q.2 D Does the school look at anyother grades. I am taking Ap GOVT. with a B. I have a 3.2 GPA right now. So the waver is so and so? |

It's actually not too likely. The only grades they care about are physics and Algebra. The only way to make up for Algebra grades is to take math courses, stats doesn't count towards their math requirements. They could care less about arts courses.
I guess someone thought it was a possibility for a waiver....but with what I've seen NR rejecting people for I doubt it. But given your math grades thus far, I doubt it's been one bad teacher messing you up. You need to take a LONG hard look at whether or not you're really ready to deal with Nuke school. |

I would not get my hopes up for a waiver with grades like that. Your average, on a 4-point scale, is 1.666. Even if you pull off the A in FST, that gets you up to a 2 (or a C) which really doesn't look strong enough for the calc and physics needed for a nuke.

I see what your saying. Thanks for the input. One more question. Is AECF anything like nuke?

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up. ... Target? As opposed to Sub? |

I was trying to think of an analogy to use when comparing AECF and nuke but they all came back to nuke. AECF is electronics. There are several ratings that come out of that pipeline but they all deal with electronics. Nuke is operating a nuclear reactor. Yes, you can be an ET coming out of either pipeline but the jobs are totally different.
There are three similarities between the two pipelines. They are both intense, both long and both require a six year commitment. |

lol strange, i thought AECF and Nuke were somewhat the same, if you got ET rating on nuke. I'm choosing a different field anyway.
This person is actually interested in that hell. Don't be so rude. |

That was a different time buddy. Back then they WANTED every body they could get crammed into the pipe line. Attrition was attrition. |

I'm going into Nuke too...is it really hard then? My recruiter said that I would have no problem, but when you are squeezing 4 years of schooling into 2 years...anyways, now I am worried. |

First, I was never a nuke, but don't sweat the small stuff. Just because the schooling is a faster pace, doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to grasp it. The teaching methods can differ from HS. You are in a professional atmosphere and not a HS classroom with your friends and other distractions. If you qualified for nuke, you should be able to do the job, don't sweat small stuff, but don't be afraid to say you don't understand something either. |
