I am a prior service marine and am reenlisting in the navy reserve. Part of the process was being interviewed by the commander at the MEPS. Ok, cool. I had the interview and it went well. I had to re-physical and re-asvab because they were both more than two years old. I scored a 99 QT on the asvab(!) and then my recruiter tells me that the commander is going to want to talk to me because of such a high score. Why is that? Am I in trouble? I know that they can't think I cheated because I scored a 98 on it two years ago. Just wondering what possible reason he would have to talk to me again. I mean, do they give you a plaque for a perfect ASVAB? lol
Just kidding but seriously, if anyone out there has a theory I'd like to hear it. Thanks. |

He could be wanting to see if you would like a different rating than the one you choose to enlist into the Navy reserves with. Perhaps a rating that comes more into line with your ASVAB/AFQT/line scores. BoatsBM1 |

That's a sound theory. I am enlisting as an IS. I'm sure there are 'harder' ratings out there for reservists but my recruiter knows that the $20k bonus is a major factor in my desire to enlist. To my knowledge none of the other ratings that are harder are offering the bonus. I could be mistaken, though. |

Captain Tass,
There is no reason for the MEPS Commander to be talking with you. They are not involved in the recruiting process AT ALL. As you stated possible for investigation into cheating but you were not over 20 points difference on your ASVAB and did not re-test recently so this is unlikely. Just read your other post. You did not talk with the MEPS commander you talked with the Navy Recruiting District Commander to get your waiver started. It then went to CNRC for final approval and they likely requested more information so back to see the CO (more likely the enlisted program officer - i.e. department head for enlisted recruiting). |

Thanks for the reply. (You're right...it wasn't the CO of the MEPS itself. He was a naval officer so it was indeed one of the options you suggested) What happened was this: I had gone to MEPS, taken a physical and an ASVAB back in July 06. Wife got deployed to Iraq so that killed my reup plans because I wanted to watch our little one until she got back. So in July of this year I restarted the process. I went to the consults and all that good stuff, my packet was sent up the chain and the waivers were all granted...however, two years have passed since my physical and ASVAB. The navy told me to submit an up-to-date physical and ASVAB before I ship off. So I don't think the CO was after info in order to grant a waiver because that has already been done. I am also too old to be an active duty sailor so I don't think it's to try and convince me to go active. I'm inclined to agree with the poster who said it was probably to encourage me to choose a different rating. |

Have you gone back for physical and ASVAB? That may be the only reason if you haven't. EPOs and NRD COs don't get involved in trying to talk applicants into changing rates. They have way more important stuff to do and that is why they pay classifiers.

Yes. The waiver packet went to BUMED. BUMED informed MEPS that I am good to go pending a new physical and ASVAB. After renewing my physical and retaking the ASVAB I was informed that the 'CO' (CO of what specifically I am not sure of) wants to talk to me because my ASVAB score is so high. That's kind of why I am confused. Why a second interview?

back in 98 I got called into the "commander's office" at the MEPS as well. I came in, he questioned me on my score and then had a represenative from each branch there come in and give me a song and dance about why I should go with them..... Except for the marines... I still remember that guy sticking his head in, looking at my test results and saying I don't want him.

Ok, that sounds plausible. Navy reserve, army and army natl guard are all I am eligible for due to my age, however.

The MEPS commander cannot offer you to other services when you process for one. MEPS is considered neutral territory (like Switzerland). Any recruiting/poaching other service applicants done there will get the recruiter permanently barred from the building.

I didn't know that, William. I thought it was rather odd when it happened, but it was a very long time ago. I'm extremely interested in what the experience will be like this time. Same MEPS Seattle 10 years later. After waiting since May, I'm finally getting to the MEPS ext week. wOOt

mw,
I was at the Head of the Navy office at Seattle MEPS in 1998. I believe the same medical officer is still working at the MEPS. |
