Both Navy Federal and Armed Forces Bank(the two main options while at Great Lakes) will be offered to you when you get there.
You can as a recruit set up the account ahead of time with them also via web site and local branchs of these two banking establishments(the information is listed on their websites under NEW RECRUITS). MA2(EXW) |

Back in the 80's the only way an enlisted could join Navy Fed was to do it overseas. I am glad they are letting everyone join. I still have my accounts with them and have a car loan and mortage thru them. A great place to bank.

MP - in the 60's enlisted could join NFCU if stationed overseas OR in the Washington DC area.

As stated you can establish an account with them now. Although, I do believe that membership is open to anyone. I guy I went to school with had an account with them, he never served and didn't have any family that served, so you shouldn't have a problem. |

Pretty much right now. Part of why I'm leaving them for USAA |

Yup it was that way in the 80's too Why. In CONUS it was Chiefs and Officers only.

USAA is almost the same way with regards to membership. |

Since they changed the regulations a couple of years ago they are ALL that way now. The one I belong to used to be strictly limited to employees of my company. Now it's open to any schlub that walks in off the street.

I agree, NFCU isnt what it used to be(I joined in 92). USAA, in my opinion is much better. Which is why I have swapped over pretty much everything to USAA.

Look up "http://www.navyfcu.org". That's where you'll find the requirements to join.
Yes, it does seem they stretch things to get members. However, I've been a member now for a little over nine years and haven't had a problem. More than I can say for some of the civilian banks I've dealt with. |

I seem to recall that E-6 and below could join NFCU at the Groton branch in the 80’s. |

They are opening branches on all branch bases now which is nice. They have overseas banks as well so when you pull into port it is nice. They now have an AD account where you can get up to $15 or $20 refunded in ATM fees.
We tried USAA stopped because it was too much of a pain to do deposits. Even to have the scanning option now apparently you need to have a loan, credit card or something else. |
