To using the FIND feature for your questions about schooling, it has been covered before. As for the wait, there are some ratings waiting up to a year to ship, you're going in early compared to many. The reason for the wait is to have enough people ready to class up after boot camp, vs people sitting around doing nothing. |

whoa! I thought the only rates that were open were SO and nuke? I'm going to talk to a recruiter this friday and see what's up, but how long was the whole process from taking your asvab to being sworn in? |

South, Good job in getting IS. The wait is nothing. Sounds like you only wait seven months. I was in DEP for 10 months for this rate back in the day. Keep your nose clean in the mean time and don't do anything stupid that would jeopardize you clearance or enlistment. There are threads around about NMITC and Dam Neck but they're pretty general as many of the specifics can't be talked about due to security. If you get there in July or August, it will be awesome. The base and the school are right on the beach. You will have access to it off duty. But I'm here to tell you that if you are there during the winter it will be a windy, cold mother. I do know this, they used to be, and probably still are picky about typing. Start practicing now. They probably use computer keyboards now but back then we had to type at least (I think) 25-30 words per minute accurately to graduate. And I'm pretty sure I had to hit 40 and above to make E-5. Start practicing, the post was pretty rough. BTW, you might want to go ahead and change your profile to something else besides "Active Duty". While you may be in the future, you're not just yet. |

The training these days is all computer based... We never took a typing test.
There is A LOT of public speaking involved. And I have to second TexasIS. July and August is beautiful. I got there in the beginning of August and left in December. It was sunny and nice when I first got there, by December it was miserable. Also you're going to want to do well. You're orders for your first duty station depend on it. |

Navychick is right, there is alot of briefing involved. If you are nervous about getting in front of people you may have a rough time, especially when you are in front of alot of senior officers or civilians. I did alot of face time with senior officials and if you are not comfortable with your presentation you will be in trouble. Get real smart with PPT too. As far as typing, well you use a computer alot so there are times when you have to get a IIR out real quick, so you have to know how to type. I think for the IS rate, you have to be able to type at least 45 - 50 WPM, that is unless they did away with the typing requirement. Anyway that's just my prespective from a retired IS1.
