The Coast Guard official site is pretty vague on specific careers that they offer. I was wondering if someone could give me some examples of Officer careers within Communications? Thanks!
If you are applying for Officer Candidate School, it's really kind of hard to say what you will be doing after you are commissioned as an Ensign. Some officer candidates apply for flight school and become pilots. That's the only real cut-and-dried situation I know to use as an example.
When I was recruiting, I had a young woman selected who wanted to work in the Marine Safety field. Her first assignment was in the work/life section at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington D.C. But her next assignment was at Marine Safety Office Charleston, SC.
There are some assignments where you would work in communications. Each district office has an operations center, and another example would be an assignment at the Telecommunication and Information Systems Command (TISCOM), in Alexandria Virginia. I can't tell you exactly what you would be doing, except you'd be in an supervisory postiton.
I always told my applicants officers in the Coast Guard were more akin to upper level management in the civilian sector. They make policy, supervise, and wear different hats. For instance, aboard a ship you could be an operations officer. Communications would be in your department. In addition to being in charge of all the comms folks, you could also be the morale officer, educational services officer, and the civil rights officer.
