Hey guys I feel ashamed of myself for asking this but I failed my drug test at MEPS for Marijuana in May 2009. It's been a year since then but I have been completely drug free. Will the Coast Guard take me as a recruit?

Why would they want to? "If you focus on results, you will NOT get change. If you focus on change, you WILL get results."

Thanks for the response. I am aware of the Coast Guard's Zero Tolerance Policy. So I guess the Coast Guard, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. is a "no-go". I have been informed that I may still be able to enlist into the U.S. Army active-duty, and Army National Guard with a "waiver". Is it true that I am "barred" from enlisting from "ANY" military branch of the U.S.?

| That's Mr. HollywoodMarine to you. |
These days the military is not granting waivers as they had a few years ago. Better have a back up plan. You made your choice and the military is upholding its zero tolerance policy.

Is it 100% possible to not get a waiver?

No, not necessarily. But with today's recruiting climate (meaning the vast majority of applicants being processed have little to no waivers required), they can afford to be picky. CG and AF are a big no go anytime, regardless of the recruiting need. Navy would be third, and Marines next. Who knows, it might change down the road. But like was said, have a back up plan if things don't change in the near future. "If you focus on results, you will NOT get change. If you focus on change, you WILL get results."

Would a letter of recommendation help me obtain enlistment for the Coast Guard or Air Force?

Your best bet would be to move to plan B. Air Force definitely is a NO GO.

To add on, you say in your second post: Again, I ask you, why would they want to take you? Especially since you claim you know of their zero tolerance policy. Four branches of the military are no-go for you. The Army might give you a chance (as they have a little more openings to fill), but even they are cracking down on positive drug tests (especially at MEPS). What do you have to offer the military? If you can answer that, you might be able to convince the waiver authority (for the Army only) that you are worthy. If not, again, have a back up plan. "If you focus on results, you will NOT get change. If you focus on change, you WILL get results."

And yet another thing. . . STOP ASKING IF YOU CAN STILL GET INTO THE AF OR CG! You have definitely ZERO CHANCE as they are the top two that have the HIGHEST ENTRY STANDARDS. You made a choice when you smoked MJ before MEPS, now you have to deal with the consequences. "If you focus on results, you will NOT get change. If you focus on change, you WILL get results."

This makes me think of something that always had me scratching my head and wondering "Why?" When I served at the Coast Guard Recruit Training Center, every week there was a group of recruits discharged because of a positive urinalysis for illegal drugs. They signed a statement that they understood they'd get the urinalysis when they arrived at the training center. They also knew they'd receive a general discharge and RE-4 reenlistment code if the urinalysis was positive for illegal drugs. But they shipped anyway. And they paid the consequences.

The Army and Army Reserves currently do not waive positive drug tests at the MEPS for enlistment. No exceptions to this current prohibition. Best bet is to try back later.
