Air Force Vs Army. So confused...Go ![]() | New ![]() | Find ![]() | Notify ![]() | Tools ![]() | Reply ![]()

I really can't decide on which interests me, the better treatment in the Air force sounds nice, but the more challenging, usually more respected Army life interests me as well. I don't know what i should look into when choosing a branch or how to tell which is for me. I haven't been able to speak to a Air Force recruiter yet because they never seem to contact me when i request information, and im not sure why, im a fairly healthy young man wanting to serve his country, where are all the Air force recruiters?! Also the Air Force guys tell me the Air Force is the best branch ever, and the Army guys tell me that the Army is the best and the Air Force is wussys or etc, it really makes it hard to choose with so many outside opinions. I would love to be Security Forces, but like i said, no one contacts me to give me any info or get me enlisted! Help guys!

First . . . Review all jobs the services have to offer Second . . . decide on a branch of the service, see a Recruiter Third . . . Go to MEPS and take the ASVAB, the results of the test will tell you what jobs you are qualified for, certain jobs require specific scores on tests within the ASVAB Remember . . . This is YOUR decision, and your decision alone. It is one of more important decisions you will make in your adult life

How come some people take the ASVAB at MEPS? i took the ASVAB with my Army National Guard recruiter, but then i decided to explore other options for right now. And yeah, i want to talk to an Air force recruiter, preferably Air National Guard, but they don't contact me. I live in Connecticut so if anyone knows of a good recruiter for me, let me know please! Also, just so it is clear, i didn't post this to make a pissing contest between branches, all of them have something great to offer to our country.

Sometimes, certain branches ahve to send their people to schols , even while on recruiting duty. When you talk to a branch like the Air Nat. Guard or regular Nat. Guard if that unit only has one recruiter and they are out of the office for a certain time, there isn't anyone to help you. It's rare though. If you are too young, then a lot of recruiters cannot afford to spend time with you. If you are in high school, go see your counselor and have them make the call in order to set up an appointment. I have never seen a recruiter say no to an appointment that a counselor set up. From Connecticut you can visit bases in New York, New Jersey and Mass. You will be able to see what the members are like especially if you want Sec. Forces for AF because they are the ones at the front gate , unless that base went with a private firm.

Since MEPS can be a good distnace from where people are there are sites that give teh ASVAB on certain days but however you can not get your true scores for 24-72 hours. If you are trying to contact a Recruiter by phone and they don't return calls find a new one or just walk in the door.

And then there is just down right laziness ! I have had a few issues with the CT Guard, I know for a fact that they have about 4+ recruiters covering the area and there is no reason why they should not be calling you in a resonable amount of time. I will warn you that CT Guard has limited positions, both the guard bases are small , hence not alot of career fields. But up in Springfield MA, there is Westover ARB , the largest AF Reserve base in the nation. They have alot more jobs than the guard bases in CT have combined. If you would like more information, send me and email and I can put you in contact with a great recruiter in your area. PS, I'm from Meriden CT orginally. As for the decision of what service, there is no one is tougher than the other or I should say "Because my branch was tougher, we are better than yours". The AF has a role that is different from the Army, they are a front line, combat ground force. The AF fights in the sky and its role on the ground is more of support and security. Of course you will think that your branch is better than another branch. But notice what you typed, AF said his was the best and Army said they were, but just had to throw in that the AF was a bunch of wussies. I find that people that have to insult someone or something because they can't or don't have anything intelligent to say are trying to compensate for thier own shortcomings. If you ask me why I think my branch is better, I will make legitimate points, based on facts and first hand knowledge. Not a comment like "The Army is a bunch of retards with a collective IQ of 12". Drop me an email if you want to know about the AF Reserve.

Ignorance plays a big factor as well. All 5 branches are great, heck I was in 3 of them. It's up to each individual to make up their own mind. Negative comments should always be taken with a grain of salt. CPO Kalbach

Navy first right out of high school. I didn't even know the Coast Guard existed. It was great, saw the world. Would have stayed but only choice was Japan(sea/shore) at least that's what the NC1 told me. Future wife said, you go Japan, we don't get married. I've been married to the lady for 18 years now. Went back to Iowa, one of the cousins that told me to go Navy was in the Iowa Guard, he said he loved it. I joined loved it too. Only thing was it was part time. Almost was recalled during Desert Storm I. Wanted active duty again, wife said, "go check the Navy". I did, they gave me an offer. Went to her and she said, "have you checked the Coast Guard?" I'm like, "aren't the civilian?" 15 years later here I am. My job satisfaction and quality of life(to me) are so much better. But this will be different for each individual. Research the services you want to join, know what their missions are, then when you find a job you like and qualify for, don't settle for anything less. Best of luck in your decision. Thanks for the reply, so you like the coast guard the most? or just that each had something to offer? Also, how difficult is it really to become a rescue swimmer in the coast guard?

It's the most mentally and physically challenging job in the Coast Guard. The A school attrition rate is over 60%(dropout). If a person wants AST, they have to join, go to their first duty station, wait 4 months, then put their name on the AST A school waiting list. Once their name comes up, they go to 4 months of the Airman program. This program further weeds out people that shouldn't be there. Once done with the Airman program, it's off to AST A school, where the best succeed. The people that drop out go back to the fleet. The Guardian was a MOVIE. Each service helped me grow as a person. I have fond memories of each. I have found the job satisfaction and quality in life in the Coast Guard. I just went over 20 total years active and now have 10 more to retire with 30 years! I just spoke with the AirForce recruiter next door,he said that the reason nobody is contacting you is that as of right now they are not hurting for anyone,in fact they are doing massive personeel cutbacks, and from my own experience the national guard is ok, but remember that they are a state run agency,if the state runs out of money...there goes the funds,if your looking for school money,i would not recomend a guard unit,Army is ok I was in the Army for 5 years,I felt that I wasent being challenged enough so I waited until my contract was up and I joined the Marine Corps, but yes..this is up to you and you alone.

Good Try Ali, The "overmanned" angle applies to the Active Duty, not the Air Guard or Air Force Reserve, they still have plenty of room. As for the state running out of money for college, there is some truth to that.

Loved the Iowa Guard. Might still be there if they'd had some active duty contracts available. When I was in the Guard the 1st Sgt said that cuts might be coming because there was no need for large unit I was at, then Desert Storm I came along, that talk stopped. CPO Kalbach
