Im 19 and have been mentally and physically preparing myself to enlist in the USMC for a year now. But having read through a few previous posts on here, I think Im already disqualified, and if that's true Im going to be very dissapointed. 1. When I was 17, I had an accidental overdose on heard medication. I took around 5-10 pills, my mom called it in as a suicide attempt, I was kept in the hospital for 3 days while I argued with them to let me go. They made me see a psych, I never went under any treatment or medication and was never diagnosed with anything. Now, I know a suicide attempt is an automatic disqualification, but since I was underage when this happened shouldn't the records be private? If I was never treated or diagnosed with anything, and the records show an accidental overdose, and I okay? 2. I took heart medication for palpitations which is basically rapid heart beat, my heart is fine and I stopped taking the medication a year ago, is this a disqualification? I have no heart condition and I am no longer on the medication, it was just rapid heart beat due to gas/indigestion. I would really appreciate any help or answers, Ive always wanted to enlist and kept my record clean all my life, Ive never gotten in trouble or done anything stupid, but I think these two things might prevent me from ever enlisting. Thanks for the help.
well sorry to say it but ALL records are looked at the military sees it all you might be able to if it were the fact that it was an "accident" you would need to talk to the recruiter and he will have you write a statement reguarding it,BUT then you hit me with a heart issue it you heart beats fast if you have gas?? sorry cant help you. might want to ask the Army..at least you will be serving
The heart issue is completely harmless, Im just bringing it up to make sure that they don't disqualify you for having taken any heart medication. And about the accidental overdose, if I explain the situation to a recruiter and the doctors at MEPS will it just be a waste of time or will they actually listen? The doctors at the hospital were pricks and they might have put it on my record as an attempted suicide, but I was able to leave the hospital without being admitted to the psych ward, and I went to a psych for consultation and they said I was fine. Im willing to undergo any kind of psychiatric tests, Im not trying to waste anyones time or put anyone's lives in danger, I just want to serve my country. Thanks
hmmmm well,i'll tell you, the docs at meps are there to disqualify you, they are not military and the faster they run through people the faster they get to go home! tell the recruiter everything, dont hold anything back, you will need a waiver but its not a huge deal

Just curious . . . What the reason was for ingesting the 5 to 10 pills? Were you placed on a 72 hour hold, in California a 5585?

Did you discontinue the meds with a Doctors permission, will the records reflect it?
I took around 5 pills because they were a much lower dose than I was used to taking (10 mg), I used to take 50 and even 100 mg, so I thought taking more would stop me from having rapid heart beat. It was a stupid idea, and my mom freaked out, but I didn't get knocked out or anything. They observed me for three days to make sure I passed the medication from my system and also to keep questioning me, but I was able to convince them to let me leave, I was 17 at the time so if they really I was suicidal they would have had to keep me in the psych ward for 2 weeks.
And the I got a doctors permission to stop taking the medication a few times, the medicine is weak enough that he said I could take it whenever I got a rapid heart beat, but its totally optional.
well on that last note, take the meds whenever you have a rapid heart beat? well you wont always have the ability to have meds on you or even near you and 60% of the time in recruit training your heart will be racing..see the problem, you croak on us and we then have to pay for it..no no no !
