I'm 5'8", male, weight roughly 240lbs (down from the 272 I started at this year), and am about 32% body fat.

Is there any way for me to join the military other than "lose the other 50 lbs and then try to enlist"?

Not on the Navy side of the house.

If you are only looking to get down to the max weight/fat% that will allow you to enter, in all likelyhood,in the long haul, you will lose the battle to remain in the service.

Well, actually, in my opinion, the size I'd have to be for military weight restrictions would be TOO SMALL! lol I would never want to be that tiny.

I pretty much just want to go into the military so I can actually have a job! I can't find ANYTHING!

WRONG REASONS FOR ENLISTING. and again you will fail miserably in the military.

you enlist to serve your country, not as a substitute for welfare.

In my opinion, and the opinion of many of my friends, going military is much less about "serving your country" and much more about having a steady career.

your friends have a woefully inadequate expectation of the military then.

One, you don't just get in and expect to do 20 years without having to work hard the entire time. High Year tenure alone means you cannot just slide by doing the bare minimum. you either advance, or you get out, period. nor is the military some last ditch solution for a paycheck. your LIFE WILL BE ON THE LINE. If you cannot accept the fact that you may be called upon to give EVERYTHING including your life to the cause.. then you are not gonna survive long.

The old recruiting Slogan: "It's not just a job, it's an Adbventure" isn't that far out of date.. it is NOT a job.. it is a lifestyle and committment to country and possibly Deity and something bigger than yourself.

You say that like I'm assuming it would be some easy ass thing to do. I KNOW it would be the hardest work I've ever done. I'm not stupid.

And I KNOW my life is on the line. That's part of why I want to be military. The thrill of the kill or be killed mentality. It's not just a "fact I have to face"... it's a fact I WANT to live up to.

wow dude. You have a lot of realizations to make. A steady career? perhaps, but with your attitude I doubt it. They can refuse to renew your contract for any numberr of reasons when your first is up and if you're a dirbag, they have even more of a reason not to let you stay

And being fat is a failure to maintain standards and will get you thrown out

How many "just jobs" can take away free time, add on extra duties, and take away half your pay for showing up late to work? None other that I know of.

well then, that's easy. You're never getting in. 190 an 5'8" is not that skinny at all.......

Ir's simple, if you really want in, THEN DO THE WORK NECESSARY. You dont do the work, you have no chance.

I second Cat's statement. I'm 5'9" and weigh 199 (as of this morning). I'm fat. Even after losing the 50 pounds, you will still be chubby unless you have done the weightlifter thing. When I was working out every day, I got down to 170 and still had a belly.

You realistically need to lose 70 pounds to be in decent military shape.

and your the kinda person I don't want my friends and family with... kill or be killed... what the hell there is SOOOOOO much more to the military then being downrange fighting. and if your out to kill then your going to get someone hurt.

but thats my opinion.

weight will not be waived, you need to loose it and bear in mind if your doing weights muscle weighs more and thus you need to loose more fat while your building muscle to make the weight criteria.

exercise and start on a good diet it will come off if you work at it

Please, do the military a favor and don't enlist. And besides, with your attitude, etc, you wouldn't last a day in the military or for that matter, basic.

Bottom line - you don't meet the weight standards you don't pass the physical. And thus, you don't get to enlist.

I can't remember how many times I told an applicant "Sorry, but until you meet the weight standards, there's not a thing I can do for you." This was usually said after the applicant told me they could do anything the physical fitness standards required of them. Then I said something else I said about a hundred times a day when I was recruiting "I don't make the rules, I only go by them."

I think all has been said here than needs to be said. Closed.
