My daughter has been talking with an Air Force recruiter for some time now. She has picked out a few areas/Jobs she wants to do as a career. She Aced the ASVAB test and the physical. Now she comes home and tells me that the Air Force signed her to an OPEN CONTRACT and hopefully they will find her a job she likes after basic training!! I am a Retired Army Recruiter with 15 years in recuiting, I believe every kid should be able to choose their career path. Is this a new thing with these Open Contracts or has my daughter just got played???!!

Perhaps maybe because the Air Force is overwhelmed with personnel that she was put in an open contract?

I agree that it sucks too, but maybe Yukondogg (our resident AF recruiter) can chime in on this.

I know Yukon has talked about applicants for the Air Force choosing 5 areas. If none of the areas are available then they go open contract. Yukon will clarify. CPO Kalbach

My son was sworn into the USAF at MEPS Oct 1 2009, he listed four jobs he wanted the last had to be open General in his case. Recruiter calls 7 weeks later and offers him a job in Cyberspace stuff like communications, its a new AFS starting Nov 2009. My son says it looks pretty interesting to him and so he accepts the job. Ship date Feb 2, 2010, four years active, 2 years inactive.
