Got this issue? Welcome to the club!

Late last week there was a Microsoft update that broke XP. If you can't boot your PC, get blue screen of death, and have no way of starting up even with safe modes you most likely have this issue.

There seems to be a work around, self help fix. May be a little advanced for some users.

I don't come to this page very often so I just found this thread. I had this, or a very similar, problem a couple weeks ago.

I have an HP Desktop and keep the automatic update feature turned on. I thought that this was for Windows updates but now am not sure. When I bring up the 'Windows Tack Manager' window, it shows 'Updates from HP Agent' running. Maybe this is just for HP updates. A couple weeks ago I went to the Windows Update page and saw that there were beaucoup updates for my system. Sooooo, I spent a few hours downloading them all. Well the next morning the computer went into the endless startup loop people on your link were talking about. I was finally able to get to the 'System Recovery' mode. (HP has a D: drive for this purpose.) The only choice I had was a hard reboot recovery option that restored the computer to 'out of the box' condition. There was some good news from this. For some odd reason or another, I decided to back up all of my user generated data the day before. I had not done this since August 2009. There was some bad news though. I lost all of my email from Outlook Express and all of my bookmarks from IE. More bad news is the hassel of trying to get all of the software that I have added. Some I had discs for...others download but I didn't have the emails with SSNs or access codes.

Lessons learned
-do more frequest backups to an external device
-learn how to backup Outlook Express and my bookmarks...AND DO It

Things to do
-find out how to turn off Automatic Updates...AND DO IT (I took a quick look in Help but couldn't find it.)

Question
-Is there someone nice enough to save me some time and tell me how to turn off Automatic Updates?
-In the link, I saw a couple udates mentioned. Does anyone know which one(s) are causing the problem?

Thanks

The security patch that was causing the issues it listed in the microsoft forum if I remember right. Not sure in Vista or 7 how to turn off the AU's if thats what your on. There should be a way to do it from start menue I believe under system tools. If you can't find it Windows website says you can do this.

Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select Turn off Automatic Updates.
Click OK.
