Ive got a 3 yr old 50" zenith plasma tv. Worked great until Fri then when i truned it on it had only a dim, grainy picture. The set used to run Hot but now its almost cool. Given the prices have fallen so fast on these sets im doubtful its worth fixing. Any suggestions?? thanks

Easy to answer.

call Zenith's 1-800 service number for nearest repair center. Ask the repair center for an in-home estimate - this 50" model is heavy and nearly immovable, right? There is normally a fee assoiciated with this service, but is deducted from the overall charge of the completed repairs. Once you know the approximate cost of repairs, check your local electronics discount store for comparable replacement with new model.

Pick the less expensive of the two options.

Hint. You may want to reverse the order of this and check the prices of a replacement, first. That would save time and the service rep wouldn't have to come to your home twice to collect the unit for repairs.

Another hint. If you do choose to buy a new one, now you have to haul off the old - and they have hazmat materials inside, so you either have to haul it away yourself to a hazmat/dump center, or pay someone else to do it for you.

Ocean if you can, Buy it on a military base exchange. I purchased the service plan for 69.00 dollars for 3 additional years.

My tv an LG came with a 2 year warranty from LG the exchange warranty added 3 more for a total of 5 years. 4 and half years later the TV developed a green stripe on the right side about an inch wide, I Called the 800 number and they came out 3 times and couldnt get it fixed. They gave me a brand new PIONEER ELITE much better and with more features than mine all I had to do was go to Tweeters and pick it up that simple.

Service warranties on the out side can run you 400.00 for 3 years. Just something to think about.

When I called about repairing the other tv (which I still have) the cost was about 600.00 and that just covered 2 parts which might eliminate the problem but could be more expensive if those new parts didnt fix the problem.

Thanks guys for the input. I sort of did what badge suggested. I basically determined that im not going to even bother repairing it and just look for a new tv.

In general im not a fan of the exchange system for electronics. My experience is they are generally overpriced and have older model electronics since they dont do the volume of many of the internet stores. But youir suggestion of an extended warranty for the way we use a tv is a great point.

My neighbor came up woth a great idea for disposal. Donate it to the salvation army..They took my neighbors and he claimed a tax deduction.

Thanks again for your inputs.
