HP 3100n
2 GB ram Vista Home Premium I am listed as the Administrator User Account Control On or Off I am attempting to replace 2 system files disk.sys and partmgr.sys with newer versions from TomTom GPS so I can connect the GPS [***** in a Box] to the computer. I've tried copying the file(s) and pasting them into the correct directory (folder) and have tried to delete the file(s) so I can then paste the new one into the folder. All result in denial of service as not authorized by System Admin! |

Need to log in as adminstrator or set up the program to be ran with adminstrator privilages.
http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsVista/en/library/0...d91033.mspx?mfr=true If you don't want to read through all the garbage just do this: Business/Ultimate editions: In "run" type secpol.msc and enable the administrative account. *The first item*. The next time you boot you can log in as Adminstrator. Home: My Computer (right click) --> [Manage] --> [Users and Groups] --> Users --> Administrator --> Properties. Then, you should use turn on Adminitrator in logon menu by this site. http://windowsxp.mvps.org/admins.htm Then you can logon in as "Administrator" |

According to the system I am the administrator. When I tried the
"Home: My Computer (right click) --> [Manage] --> [Users and Groups] --> Users --> Administrator --> Properties." I got to Manage, but could not find "Users and Groups" only "System Tools, Storage, and Services and Applications" expanded all of then to check for something on users and groups - no luck. |

Isn't it termed "Secondary Logon" under Services? Must be enabled and started in order to use the "Run As" service, I believe.

Masters Mate - Secondary Log In is and has been enabled, what is confusing me is if the system says I am the administrator why won't it let me make changes (i.e. replace a file (drive.sys) with a newer version)?

My guess is that you don't have the needed permissions. So, you might try checking your effective permissions on the files in question. To do this though you will need to goto the properties of the file then Security Tab->Advanced button->Effective permissions tab. Hit the select button and put in your username. It should then give you a read out of your permissions. Anything other than full permissions is not gonna work more than likely.
Other than that the file might be in use(both are system files) and a boot to safe mode might work also. |

If you haven't figured it out yet, try this:
Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools. Once this opens, select Computer Management. Then select Local users and groups. Double-click your user name, then click the "Member Of" tab and look for Administrator to be in the list. If it is not there, click the add button and add Administrators. I'm new to Vista, but think this will work for you. As previously said, it all depends on what permissions your user name was setup with. --Jim |
