Before i joined the CG i played an Activision game online called Battlezone where you could build your own bases and units. Once a base and all of your ships were in place, you pretty much try to take out your opponents and their defenses. Anyone know any games in that type of genre available nowa days? Not really a shooter, but more of a military strategy game in multiplayer, for the PC.
The Command and Conquer series seems to still be going strong but I've never had and incredible amount of interest in them. I recently bought World in Conflict which I really enjoyed. It's a real-time strategy (RTS) that has a multi-player feature. The only thing different is you don't build bases, only resources. It's pretty fun, similar to older games spending resource points to purchase units which are air-dropped to a drop-zone you designate.
Rome is decent too, you don't build cities though. You can use and fortify existing ones though. Fun single player and multiplayer also, but it's a little more inclusive with control over the economy and things like that but it can all be automated if you don't like dealing with it.

I heart Command and Conquer: Red Alert!
You can also play Risk online. Lol, just google it.
