I'm heading to a 110' in Bahrain this winter and was thinking about getting a world SIM card for my phone, but I don't really know how it works. Do you maintain a phone service provider in the US, and the card allows you to get calls, or does the card essentially act as the provider? Can you get a World SIM for any phone, or are only certain phones compatible? I'm currently with Sprint and have a Blackberry. Has anyone BTDT that can shed some light on the process?
Our youngest(Marine) deploys out of Italy. He got a local cell phone and we call him through Skype. It costs about .02 cents a minute. I would think it would work the opposite way if you have access to a computer.
I'm actually in Bahrain shoreside now. We have wifi but it is very very slow. You don't keep your cell company from the states. There are no towers here for that. But what most of us have done is get a wifi router from a local company here that is not that expensive and faster than the internet at your residence and you pay by the gig. Skype is hit or miss out here depending on the amount of people on the network at a given time. What I did is put my account on hold w/ ATT over in the states and when I get back I will get it turned back on.
