I am getting tired of all the crashes that I have with Microsoft Vista that I am considering buying an Apple laptop. Here’s how I got there:
My Compaq laptop died and I sent it back to Compaq. They fixed it and sent it back. It worked fine until the first time I turned it off. When I ran it back up it said that my Vista was a pirated copy. Now I didn’t put on a pirated copy and it didn’t do this before Compaq got it, so they had to do it. Of course, when I called Compaq they said that it was not their problem and I should call Microsoft. Upon doing that I got the standard answer that the problem was Compaq’s not Microsoft. So now, every time I turn my laptop off I must re-start my laptop to original condition which means I lose ALL my frigging data! I hate the fact that Compaq screwed up my computer and there’s nothing I can do about it.
So, anyone know of any problems with the Apple laptops? I am thinking of buying one very soon and saying ‘good bye’ to Microsoft and their blue screen of death forever!

I'd be loosing it on Compaq. There's got to be a consumer protection group you could call for help. Remind be to never buy anything from Compaq. Sounds kind of like what happened to my HP laptop. Circuit City fixed it once but it only last another few months. All in all, it lasted about a year.
That HP laptop was actually a gift from my coworkers back when I was injured on-the-job.
Don, your HP will be repaired by the very same technicians that fixed my Compaq! You will receive the very same BS as HP owns Compaq (or vice versa), I think. In the future, I will only buy Apple, and that includes for my office. So, in the next year and a half I’ll probably buy two Apple laptops and eight Apple desk tops!
Personally, I am tired of that frigging Blue Screen of Death!
TJ, I have had MAC's for years. They are very reliable machines. I run Office for MAC on them and they just plug along. I curently have 3 of them networked at the house.
I would buy the Apple Care extended warranty since they are machines and do occasionally have issues.
Thanks Pat. I am considering replacing all my computers at the office to Mac. That’ll be a little expensive as my total purchase would be two laptops and seven or eight desktops. Even if I buy the ’cheaper Macs, I gotta sell a lot of properties to pay the bills AND buy Macs! I guess I’ll replace them one at a time.
Duckcop, it’s a great write off but I still have to earn and spend the money. But this whole thing got me thinking. We have clients that can’t see our little computer screens so, while I upgrade the office to Mac, I will also put in two wide screen TV’s that I’ll hook to the output of the computers so the clients can better see the screen. I can also display out listings while the computers are not in use. I am NOT paying for cable, though! They aren’t toys… they are tools!
What probably happened is that someone stole the key to Vista and Microsoft logged it as pirated. It could have been some little tech geek at Compaq. Either way move to MAC! I have had apple for years and I will never buy another PC as long as I live.
Check into buying refurbished (online at apple) or refreshed (in the store). They are much cheaper and have the exact same coverage as the new ones. I saved $300 on my MacBook Pro. Flynn is right though you should buy AppleCare. I have it and have never had to worry about the problems that arise. They take it and fix it good as new without any gripes or complaints.
The great thing about Apple customer service is that you get their attention AND they speak english. You can make an appointment just to ask questions or whatever. It is really the best cust. service I have ever had.
Hobob, I made the decision to switch. It’ll take me a while to generate the cash so I’ll have to do it slowly. I figure I can buy that MicroSpft Office for Mac so we can keep talking to the rest of the world. But I’ll tell you, Compaq really screwed up and I don’t like that BOTH Compaq and MicroSoft point fingers at each other. Rather than help their customers, they pointed fingers!
Oh, and don’t write that Pat Flynn is right! It’ll go to his head!! And believe me when I say, none of us want that!!!
I know it's a day late and a dollar short, but for anyone else out there laptop shopping, avoid Compaq and HP with Vista pre-installed like the plague. HP has an issue with ethernet drivers. Basically it has 2 sets, you can't uninstall the "extra" one. Basically, your internet connection crashes repeatedly. It's a know issue at HP and most retailers, but the retail geek won't tell you about it. Had a friend go through hell with Best Buy after getting an HP.
Anyway, Mac's are good, no real problems. I bought a VAIO so I'd have a PC version for other software I use that isn't Mac friendly. I've had no problems with Sony and I don't know of any unhappy Toshiba owners off hand. Hope that helps someone.
Sounds like when it was in the repair shop they reinstalled your operating system and used a generic cd key they had around instead of using the legit cd key that would be somewhere in the paperwork that came with your laptop. I'd recommend locating your cd key and calling microsoft to see if they can help you change the key from the one that is currently being used to the one that your computer should be using.
TJ, don't you have a "Key" on your PC somewhere? If you call MS and tell them (again?) what happened and explain you want to do the right thing and re-register your software, they SHOULD work with you to re-register your software.
Dennis, I have gone round and round with MicroSoft and Compaq. Neither seemed very customer focused. And I grew REALLY tired of them!
I am typing this on my new MacBook. It's fast, easy to use and so far I like it better than my old Compaq. Time will tell. But Microsoft and Compaq should be ashamed of the service they failed to provide me. They drove me to MacBook.
Pat, so far it does everything I need it to do for work. It is not a game computer, so I don't care when people tell me that there are more games in the other platform. So far, I like it. I'm sure I'll like it more when I get used to it.
I just finally made the transition to Mac a couple months ago. I will never go back. This by far smokes my HP Laptop. Got a good deal on it as well. Bought at the NEX Online, No Tax & Free Shipping.
