Figured I'd mention this to all. Last night I was checking local home prices on Zillow.com and picked up a virus while on that site. It happened while I was moving the mouse pointer over a link. A pop up came up that said a threat has been detected and it then went to a fake Windows 7 security page. It said you're running an "unregistered version" of Windows 7 antivirus protection and need to upgrade to a premium version. It also started running a fake scan listing obvious trojans, worms, etc it had located. Another small pop-up kept poping up saying I'm infected and need to run Windows 7 scans. Some programs started to lock up. I have AVG (MS Win 7 endorsed) and Super Anti-Spyware installed. Super AS would run but didn't clean it off. The virus disabled the AVG so I couldn't run it. What I did to fix it was go back and do a sys restore for 5/12/11. That seemed to elimnate the fake Windows 7 virus pop-ups. I can now run my AVG for a full scan. I might look at uploading the free Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) as that is also compatable with Windows 7. The catch there is it might want me to delete the other antivirus programs I have. Has anyone used the MSE with Windows 7? If so....good, bad??? Stick with AVG and Super AS?? FWIW....I had been using McAfee but wasn't too happy with that.

I'm a big fan of Security Essentials. Runs fairly quietly in the background and does a good job. FWIW, I have it on all my computers and recommend it to anyone that has a Microsoft OS. Travis

This is a type of virus that tries to "trick" you into buying software to get the virus off. Easy fix in a 30 mintue (or so) period. Run windows in safe mode with networking Download 3 programs - RKill (terminates any malicious software running) -Ccleaner (clean outs and restores all registries) -Malware Bytes (Removes all malicious software from the computer) Wam, bam, thank ya ma'am no more virus. Perhaps I should've been an IT. I run Norton on my windows 7 and have only encountered a virus once when there was a lapse in my contract.

I forgot, also make sure your browser settings is set to "No Proxy", the virus likes to take control with proxies and redirect all internet activity to some bogus "buy this software" website. To change proxy settings Tools>internet options> somewhere in there

Thanks. With Win 7 there isn't an option "No Proxy". You can check a box and manually enter in a proxy, otherwise...no proxies appears to be a default setting. I haven't had any problems since I went back and did the sys restore. I'm hoping the virus didn't leave any footprints in the computer. I'v ran quite a few different scans with different scan tools and nothing has been picked up so far. I like the MSE option.
