Anyone else out there use MS FrontPage to create and edit Websites? I've been using FrontPage to manage my Website for about 7 years now. With a rather low learning curve, I found the editor easy to use, especially with the automated processes such as connecting with the host server without having to use a FTP program.
Yesterday, I was informed by my hosting service that they had discontinued use of the FrontPage server extentions - the sub-routines which interface FrontPage to the server - because of severe security issues. FrontPage is part of the Microsoft Office suite with a built in set of collaboration tools which allows several employees to "collaborate" on a project whether they are using FrontPage, Word, Excel or PowerPoint. Unfortunately, these same collaboraton tools make it easier for hackers to break into one's Website and do serious damage. Microsoft will no longer be producing FrontPage. Seems that all that automation hype of 10 years ago that high technology was going to save us all from the drudgery of life was just a lot of Madison Avenue bull crap. Much of that automation has come back to byte us on the butt, especially with privacy issues. Question is, has anyone migrated over to the Dreamweaver Web editor from MS FrontPage? If so, did you find the learning curve for Dreamweaver high or low? What FTP program to you use to publish and manage your Website? Or, is there another Web editing tool that you think that I should consider? My experience in creating and managing Websites goes back to before the first automated Web editor when I was using just simple word processor such as MS NotePad or Apple Simple Text and coding the HTML by hand - a major pain in the arse. Thanks in advance for any advice. Mark |

I have been using Dreamweaver for years now. I really enjoy it and think it is so much better than any other program including frontpage. I am not a fan of Microsoft software. I am a Mac user and proud of it. For simple uploading and things to my website I use Transmit, but it is only for Mac, that I know of.
Dreamweaver is great especially the new CS3 with Adobe. Much more capabilities than other web editing software. I highly recommend it. Hobab |

I use FrontPage for all my web sites right now, mainly because the CG still seems to be wed to it (and I maintain a couple of CG sites). Now that FP has been discontinued by MicroSoft (and will probably stop being supported after a while), I've been thinking of changing to their new product -- but I can't find out much about it (that is, how close it is to FP, the learning curve, and whether or not it includes an uploading routine). ...gjd |
