There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch

If any of you folks, like me, were thinking of upgrading your XP system to Windows 7, here's what Microsoft has to say about that:

"On the other hand, if you're running Windows XP, or any other operating system for that matter, we recommend that you experience Windows 7 on a new PC"

So, I have a 3 GHz system that I'm supposed to just throw away? Mad

I spent 17 years at Apple and they spend huge amounts of resources making sure their new OS versions were backward compatible.

I know a few people that upgraded from XP to Windows 7 beta versions without major issues, in fact some were running it off netbooks, which aren't that powerful. I would check your system specs compared to the system requirements for the OS before deciding not to upgrade/buy a new machine.

I am assuming they get more money from the computer manufacturer than they do from you buying a retail version of Windows 7, hence the reason for recommending you purchase a new computer. Of course there could be some software applications that aren't compatible, but you should be able to find out if they are compatible before upgrading.

When I worked for a company manufacturing PC's that certainly was not the case. The PC manufacturer's insist on deep discounts because without those machines Microsoft has no customers.

I'm afraid that upgrading an XP machine, when MS explicitly suggests it isn't a good idea, will result in a slippery slope of suddenly having to replace applications and a host of other things. I have a pretty old cable modem, unsupported now by my ISP.....and I doubt the manufacturer will waste any time upgrading the software for a modem they no longer sell.

The good news is my wife has given me the go ahead to buy a new system. But after 17 years of not having to pay for a computer I really hate doing so.

Additional good news is a friend with MS that can get me a discount on a new MS Office suite to replace my 2000 version.

Guess I'll go for it.

EX, I need to buy three new computers for the office and I need a wireless network for 10+ computers and a color laser printer to be shared by all. I cannot currently make my necessary purchases because there are no computers on the shelves!

I’d buy Macs, but my agents cannot figure out how to use them! No, I can’t figure it out, either!

Like you, I must wait to make things work well!!
Confused

I would assume that like Vista, it is more hardware compatability issues than software. (for these purposes including drivers with hardware). Unless specifically configured on special order with XP vice Vista, most XP machines have 3 or 4 generation old hardware. (Of course, some folks are excpetions)

Mighty, like many people I tend to stick with my applications as they age gracefully. I'm running MS Office 2000 still. According to MS's website they basically say Office 2003 will be ok but make no mention of my 2000.

I'm also using a Motorola Cable Modem which my ISP no longer supports, and I suspect Moto, since they have rolled out a few new models since I bought mine, will also not provide an upgrade path for it.

However, I have been such a good boy that my wife has told me to buy the new system. Son's wedding is this weekend, after which I will get serious.

Dis, surely you jest.... Big Grin

Everyone knows there are no skills required to run Macs. Hmmm, or maybe I drank a bit too much Apple Kool Aid in my 17 years working there..... Wink

I don't care what Microsoft has to say... NEVER upgrade an O/S without doing a clean install. They kept me employed for 11 years by telling people "it will work, and you'll LOVE it".

So, I am now a Windows 7 user. So far so good, although the text for the desktop icons and internet sites seems glary and overly bright. No matter what I try I can't figure out how to fix the problem. Desktop icons text almost looks like a shadow font.
