Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum, and just had a question I was hoping some of you might have some insight on.
I'll be going to IT A school sometime in the near future, and am curious what the billet picks will be like as for cutters. I'm thinking I want to get my feet wet right from the get-go and do some sea-time, but am unsure which cutters have female berthing. I was told only the larger cutters do, but that doesn't sound right, and I keep hearing conflicting stories. Does anyone know which types of cutters have female berthing, and even better, specific cutters? Just trying to get an idea of what life will be like after A School Thanks for any replies This message has been edited. Last edited by: Coastiegirl0909, |

There is no "female birthing" on any USCG cutters! Someone needs to work on their attention to detail before reporting to A school! -RX

Ooh...rude, completely unhelpful and ingnorant all at once. Maybe we can make this a team effort, and I can work on my "attention to detail" while you work on your manners and public forum behavior.
To anyone else, I apologize for my mis-wording, but I really just want to know which cutters... 378's for the most part are available to females. Any informative responses would be appreciated, and any further remarks from the above poster will be ignored. |

You are correct with the 378's. Also the Polar Boats have plenty of berthing as well as the new National Security Cutters.

Good luck with that attitude at A School! Learning to accept constructive criticism will serve you well in your USCG career should you ever actually get one started. Also if you're going to call someone "ingnorant" and in the same sentence complain about their manners, you might want to keep a dictionary nearby!! Good luck! -RX ig⋅no⋅rant /ˈɪgnərənt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ig-ner-uhnt] Show IPA –adjective 1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man. 2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics. 3. uninformed; unaware. 4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement. Origin: 1325–75; ME ignora(u)nt < L ignōrant- (s. of ignōrāns), prp. of ignōrāre to ignore; see -ant |

RX - perhaps you could go back to your civilian life and leave Coastie Business to the Coasties.
As for Coastiegirl, as a female IT you're afloat picks will mainly be limited to cutters 270' and above. Of course that is if these billets are available. There are few IT3 afloat billets and most likely fewer available with female berthing. You'll normally be told what billets are available for your graduating IT class, and if there is a female afloat billet, jump on it, you'll have fun. |

coastiegirl0909 I was on a couple 378's with females onboard. They of course had thier own berthing area. If I remember correctly there were ten racks hence the billet number for enlisted women was ten. There was also women officers on board and they had staterooms. The women I served with were just as competant as the men, sometimes better. Go for it I don't think you'll regret it. Good Luck

270's, 378's and Polar's definately. I have three tours on 378's. Even in 89 they had female berthing. I'm not sure about the 225's. But I'm not sure what the billet structure is for IT's. 210's have female berthing but I believe this is an IT1 billet. I would also look in to the CGC Alex Haley. I would think for a motivated IT out of school that really wants to experience both underway life and a wide array of equipment. There is a bright shiny new white Cutter in Alameda with a second soon to be commissioned. You would also work for an ITC instead of the ET's.

Any cutter that has an IT on it has female berthing so that should be helpful to you.

I was on one of the last cutters that didn't have female berthing that had an IT and that was the 8 123' patrol boats that have been decommissioned!

You should learn what your talking about before jumping on someone about attention to detail. If you have been out of the CG long enough where there was no female berthing on any CG cutter then you should be saying, "Back in the day..." "When I was in Nam..." "Before there was cars..." or my favorite "...up hill in the snow both ways..." I have great repect for my elders and vet's, but little for you now. You have contributed nothing to this thread but showing others how much of your own foot fits in your mouth. Good luck in A school Coastiegirl0909, I recommend a cutter out of A school. Once your classes list of picks comes out dont be affraid to ask for advice on here. |

Thanks for all the helpful info, everyone! I'll definitely put my name down for a cutter straight out of A school and hope for the best
As an afterthought...does anyone have any "Polar-Roller" experiences you feel like sharing? I'm not so sure if I'm brave enough to put my name down for one of those, but am oddly fascinated for some reason. Also, how quick is IT advancement these days? |

Think the Ice Breakers are 1st billet's. Advancements easy tell you want to make 1st, they are not making vary many right now and I know a few guys that have been on the list for a few years.

The CGC CAMPBELL was all male crew in 1999, has that changed?

Not positive but believe some of the 210's are male only crews as well 'cept for the "0"'s. Nonetheless, recommend not stressing about it too much, you'll see the list of your classes billets soon enough. As for the attention to detail comment from the guy who lives in the glass house, I only wish I could be so perfect that I could spend my time picking at others' grammar on an internet discussion board. GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!1 |

When Chase went co-ed in 1980, I always thought the women added a bit more couth to the general make up of the crew. Especially noteworthy was the creative usage for the urinal in the head of their 10 man berthing. They had adapted it to hold 3 or 4 flower pots, giving a more usefull purpose to their particular berthing area.
Nothing further to add. |

CoastieGirl,
Here is a link to all of the cutters that have female berthing on them: http://www.uscg.mil/epm/docs/F...ack_Availability.pdf Note there are not ITs aboard all of these cutters. If there is an IT billet on the cutter, then it is possible for a female IT to serve aboard the cutter. |
