Is there anybody here who is no longer in the CG and can comment on what type of job they do now after the CG. I'm just curious to see the different positions in the IT field one may be qualified to do after being an IT in the CG. I just recieved my Associates Degree in Telecommunications Systems Management and will be shipping out to boot camp in January and plan to further my experience in my degree by going IT once in the CG.
My point was only that first you need to focus on getting through boot camp, whereas you are already planning for a post CG career.
That was it. Nothing negative.
I'm a retired E-5 because my career was cut short by a motorcycle accident. I see nothing wrong with you going in as an E-3 nor do I believe I have said anything about it.
I apologize, it's just hard sometimes to get any good feedback. These forums are for people to communicate, catch up, learn, ask questions and it seems there are some people on here who only spend there time making other people feel stupid by by giving sarcastic and rude remarks to some perfectly legitimate questions.Again, I am very sorry for lashing out, I wasn't having the best time last night and should have asked you to ellaborate a little before I made myself look like an a**. Moving on, I understand what you mean by already planning my post-CG career but that's not really what I'm doing. I should have phrased what I posted differently, I was really wondering if anyone could say what it is they do now just out of curiosity, I have a good idea of what I want to do in my career, it's just interesting to me see what people do now, given they did not stay in the CG. Sorry again, I guess it looks like I'm actually the biggest A-HOLE on the forum!
The apology wasn't necessary but I thank you for it anyway.
Now, here's a little something to consider. I believe you stated you are completing your AA degree prior to joining. Think about making the CG your first career. As in 20 years. That would give you plenty of time to complete at least a Bachelor's Degree and possibly a Masters. At the end of 20 years you would now have a high level education, 20 years experience and a paycheck for the rest of your life.
I know 20 years seems like a lifetime but you would still probably be about 40 years old and that retirement check, plus life time medical coverage, gives you a great deal of choice when deciding what to do with the rest of your life.
Very good point, the thing is, I am not by any means ruling out the CG as my career, honestly, I feel it is a 70% chance of my chosen future, but if that other 30% were to be where I fall, I'd just like to reassure myself that I didn't waste all this time getting my AD, with CG hands-on experience in my field, and then come up short in the end, if I were to choose to leave.
Also... the apology was definately neccesary. Thanks
The bottom line - the line you stay in the better your opportunities will be when you get out....
Leave after 4 even 8 as an IT and you probably be able to get a job as a entry level telecoms tech with a telco, cable company, or communications services provider of some sort, although you may get a bonus because you have experience... If you're sharp you might be able to get a contractor possition at a company that has a contract with the govt...
Leave after 10+ after making IT1 or even better ITC or CWO and you can probably find your way into a better paying management job. It's also not unheard of for folks to "retire" into their job as a GS...
as mentioned opportunities abound in this rate...fight for higher ground and see what opportunities come your way. Get a few degree's along the way, couple them with some current and valuable IT certifications and you have a winning formula for post-CG success.
