Has every IT who has been on a ship, or supported one has gotten a question or had thoughts of Fiber shoreties or is it just me?
I'm working on a project to put fiber to the pier, and make a fiber shoretie for a bouy tender I support. They have horable bandwidth and fiber is the only option I have found to get them decent bandwidth.
Wanted to bounce my ideas around here to see what other IT's think, if they can find any holes to shoot into my project, and possibly to come up with something that could provide a fiber shoretie for any CG unit that wants it.
For the actual fiber for the shoretie search for "graybar tactical fiber optic cable". This a great shoretie option but a little spendy.
For the connectors East Coast Russel Stoles would be used. The black plastic piece that holds and recives the pens would be removed for both female and male conectors. They would still have thread's and rubber gaskets to provide a water proof connection.
Connectors would have an extra long strain relief boot for supporting the fiber near the connector.
Fiber would go through bulkhead and terminate in a fiber drop near the shoretie or terminate inside an enclosure with the shoretie connector on it.
Fiber would not terminate in any Russel Stoles.
A retractable shield would protect the fiber sticking out of the connector a little bit while connected to ship, and completly cover the fiber when not connected.
If any one would like drawings I have made on the set up email me edward.a.clark@uscg.mil. I'm not the best artest but you'll get the picture.
