I used to be am IT1 in the USN but I seperated back in July. After adventuring for a few months in the civilian world I decided thatI had enough and that I want to go back to Active Duty. I am in the process of submitting my rate determination package to join the USCG as an IT. Part of this package is submitting my goals and objectives. I've never had to write them down before and I am having a really difficult time. Can you guys please help me out? Can you provide me some samples so I can get a couple of ideas? This is the last item remaining before my recruiter can send the package.

Ask yourself a question. What are my goals and objectives? Are you looking to complete your education while back on active duty? Are you looking to eventually join the officer ranks and go OCS or CWO? Do you want to make ITC someday? Sit down and think about what it is you want to do with your career while back on AD and what field of work you would like to be doing when you retire someday. Write them down, think about things more for a while, then repeat the process over again. Once you have a solid list on paper, then you will have your goals and objectives. Also, do you wish to stay an IT or are you looking at another rate?

My most immediate professional goals are (1 -4 years):

-Make CPO
-Go LDO/CWO
-Get a Bachelor's Degree in the Information Systems field. I am looking at Buisness Administration with a concentration on Info Syst.
-I want to obtain the following certifications:
Cisco CCNA, CCSP and CCNP
Network +
Windows MCSE, MCSA and MCDST
-Complete all 3 levels of ITIL certifications.

What are the different IT "C" Schools the Coast Guard has? Because I would like to earn the opportunity to go to a few so I can broaden my USCG IT knowledge.

Even thought I have my goals in place I am having issues wording the objectives. If some could give me some samples, advice or guidance on how to word them I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Just remember that you are not writing to a board of CDRs. You basically are writing to ONE ITCM. It may help you a bit to ask your recruiter for the CG IT EPQs. There are some pretty big differences between an USN and USCG IT.

I am completing my as we speak. Not sure how well it will work for me as compared to a USN IT, but we are giving it the old college try.
