Im going to be lat moving to 0861. I have been reading up on it but how much of a power curve am I really gonna be at when i am done with all my school and report to my new unit as a corporal. I also have a couple questions.
-What is the difference between say ANGLICO and a regular Battery? -I read on a previous thread that if you do get jump qual'd that you are a (something or other) liason, I think it was gun fire liason. So what is the difference? Alright I believe that is it for now. Thanks. |

My question back to you is where are you lat moving from?
-What is the difference between say ANGLICO and a regular Battery? An 0861 in a regular battery can serve in a few roles. You can be attached to an infantry battalion and serve as a forward observer in one of their companies or you can stay at the battalion and act as a liason between the battalion and the firing battery. ANGLiCo is strictly liason. That's what it stands for Air Naval Gunfire Liason Company. Here is a good article on Anglico http://www.military.com/NewContent/0,13190,NL_ANGLICO_120304-P1,00.html Here is the Ft Sill website for MASOC http://sill-www.army.mil/usmc/Target_Acquisition/FireSupport/ Merle may be able to give you some good info as well. Hope this was helpful. |

Yes it was helpful so if I was looking for more of a combat role what is the more logical choice. I am motor-T with 1st tank bn so I know not a damn thing about arty. I'm trying to learn as much as I can. It really seems something good but I want more of hands on role and combat if it makes any sence. |

I just got done reading that article on anglico and that's exactly what I want!!! While in school can I specifically ask for that? How can I get get to that unit because I want to limit my randomness with it and actually get it locked in.

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl. |
Every 0861 is responsible for some type of liaison. You are Artillery/Naval Gunfire's representative to the supported unit. As a Cpl, you can be assigned several places.
All 0861s have the same duties no matter what unit they are assigned to. Everyone up to Cpl are normally with the Rifle Companies providing support to them, Sgts and above are doing less fire observation and more fire support planning and coordination. You picked a great MOS to lat move to. Good luck. |

Great thanks. I'm just worried that I am going to get stuck behind a desk when you pick up Sgt. I'm not a desk guy I'm a field guy. I love the field, training, doing hands on and working. I hate the desk so I just worry that with my cutting score what it's at now I might be picking up Sgt before I want to (my score is 1540). I'm more then happy going with grunts and doing that whole thing. When you said what Sgts do I'm just worried about that. I have no worries that I might not like it because everything I've read seems amazing. I don't want to deny the rank either. Maybe I can work out a deal with them that if I do pick up I can stay a field guy. Any more advice or input?

Don't worry about losing field time as you go up in rank. Firing battery's rate Sgt's for 0861's so you'll be in the field.

Everyone goes to the field. Just because the Sgts and above are not observing fires, it doesnt mean they are not in the field. A lost art that no one talks about these days is crater analysis. Find some of the crusty 0861s running around and get schooled on that. |

Oh, I'm well aware of that. I spent 6 years at a firing battery, 2 years at a regimental FDC and 1 1/2 years at a battalion FDC. I was really just pointing out that as a Sgt he shouldn't worry. You're certainly right about crater analysis. It's an invaluable tool, when done correctly. By the way, I am TMug79. |
