Folks,
Has the US Marines ever considered having a Field Artillery Gun Race competition between the West coast and East coast divisions like the Canadian Army has today. The Canadians use the older retired 105mm pack howitzer from Italy. The USMC could use the 75mm pack howitzer that many bases use for saluting. Or the could do like the original British Naval Field Artillery Gun Races and use the 1800 pack howitzer which in this instance would be the 12pdr that was used in the American Civil War. Below is two links. The first shows the Canadian Army Gun Race Teams in competition (ie the use to have one with the Canadian Navy like the British one with older 1800 Landing Guns but stopped due to high injuries). The second link is to a message thread that covers the different nation Gun Races, showing the British Naval teams in action which are considered the best and most brutal. The races came into existence from Victorian navy days where the Royal Navy provided field artillery for their Royal Marines when they landed. During the Boer War in the early 1900s they came ashore with the Royal Marines and crossed some pretty roughed territory having to use cranes, etc. across impasses. Jack E.
