This poolee has a question for any Marine willing to answer.
My recruiter wants me to ship in the middle of September. The problem is there are currently no spots open for the MOS of 0861. Well he came up to me yesterday saying there was an opening for 0844 and stated that once I finish the course at Ft. Sill, I will be reclassed as an 0861 and sent to Coronado. When I questioned him, he said all 0861's start as 0844's. Well I kind of thought this sounded weird and after some research, it still doesn't sound right. About.com has an 0844 attending the Field Artillery Fire Control Man Course while an 0861 would attend Marine Artillery Scout Observer Course and then be sent to Coronado. Then on here, I believe SCMerle stated that an 0861 recons and sends the info to an 0844.
My question is: Is what my recruiter said true or false?? I don't want to call him a liar and am thinking maybe he is just confused or what not but I just needed a definitive answer on all of this and thought one of you could help. Thanks all.

Please remember, a recruiter is not an expert on all MOSs. He may be able to speak in detail on his/her own MOS, but specifics on others he can not possibly know.
Edit to Add: Are you a reservist? If not, there is no way for you to specifically enlist for this MOS. You will be given a choice of an enlistment option where you are guarenteed one of several MOSs.

Thank you SCMerle, you are always a great help. I realize a recruiter isn't an expert on MOS's and after talking to him about it, it was the SSgt at the station that gave him the information. So I'm not sure what the confusion was but they realized the mistake and gave me different options.
And no I am not going reserves. I believe I would go to Boot Camp with the MOS of 08xx correct?? Anyways, my recruiter showed me the list and said that once an 0861 spot opens up, I should ship because I have a better shot at getting it.
Although you may have different MOSs that fall into that enlistment option, dont try to guess when to ship based upon when an 0861 slot may open. Any MOS you may get in the Fire Support option are good. I have met/worked with many good Marines in the 08 Field.
Alright well thanks SCMerle! I will just ship out when they want me to. No sitting around for me. I need to just focus on earning the title of "Marine" anyways. Not get to far ahead of myself.
