Don't mean to intrude but I figure my question best suited this area. Anyways I was wondering whats the daily life like for a Marine artillery unit when not deployed? Just wondering because I might decide to take up a few college classes if possible. But anyways, any answers would be well appreciated.

additionally, do artillery Marines sometimes function as grunts?

If you look down the list you will find what your looking for. No you will not function as grunts in the sense that you will do planned ambush's etc.. Sometimes you will be asked to do grunt like things. I did JTF missions, Trap missions, MSR security, act as an agressor force to harass the the grunts, provisanial rifle company to do grunt things so the real grunts can be freed up to do other things more to their trade, etc.

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl.

It all depends on the Op Tempo of your unit. I found that as a junior enlisted Marine, it would have been very difficult to take classes. We were constantly going to the field, never knowing what time we would get off for the day, etc. There are other MOSs where it would be easier to take college classes during your off time.

So what other MOS'es would make it easier for me to take college classes, I'm looking for something where I can be active and not sit at a desk. What are some MOS's I should look into?

Non-Combat Arms. Infantry, Artillery, Tanks, Amtracs, etc make it very difficult to take classes. Engineers, Communications, MP, Admin etc would probably be easier to take classes. But, it all depends on the Op tempo of your unit.

OK James. If you are worried about being sent to a Combat Zone, maybe the Marine Corps is not for you. I thought you were talking about taking college classes, not about the possibility of going to a combat zone.

The aviation forum is a couple of doors down, why dont you ask them.

All Marines, regardless of MOS will be sent to a combat zone to perform their jobs. The Infantry will need all of the support MOSs to accomplish their mission.
