Congrats! My big brother is at FT Sill right now! I cannot believe he chose Arty coming from a father who is a Comm guy that served with both the wing and ReCon! But I'm still proud of him. Now he and my hubby(6541)can fight over who has the better guns!

Congrats mamoid on the graduation boot . I was there twice, first time after boot in 1986 and again for BNCOC in 89. Unbeliveable the place is still a suck pit.
To your post Edwards, that is a funny comment about the sleezy strip clubs, they were some of the worst, even worse than those around CLNC in the 80's. What a F'ng dump Ft Sill was/is

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl.

I did a year in the MD National Guard and for AT we went to Ft. Sill in April, 01. The sleazy strip joints along the main entrance were all torn down. Something about neighborhood improvement. In 01, things had not changed since I was there in 85.

The place still sucks. we have nightly rack checks and still live in open squadbays. Theres cinderella liberty on weekends. But to answer the questions about strip clubs, theres two in Lawton, both forbidden to all Marines. Hell, were not even allowed to eat at the two decent resturants in the mall. Theres also two whore houses which a lot of Marines go to. I think the most popular is called Classics or something. All in all, Ft. Sill sucks, but the training is excellent (not to mention the fatbody Army chow)

Ft. Sill did not stink for me. I visted the museum, paid my respect to Geronimo, whom my great-great uncle in the U.S. Calvary used to chase [and never caught!]. There was hunting, hiking and other great stuff. It is a transit duty station that one needs to make the most of.

I went through there in 1981. The best thing was running from our side of the base, up the hill to main-side, in formation and hold reveille for the base General there. He liked the fact that Marines would wake him up singing in formation. The funniest part about that is that we would hit the road early and get to his house right before the bugal would sound over the base speakers.

The reality was that I never saw the Army run in formation there. Their version of the platoon "guide", was a guy who carried an electric megaphone for the Drill Sgt as he sang cadence while marching in formation. When we ran by the "boot Army" barracks, their Drill Sgt's would make them turn their backs to us and tell them they didn't rate to see Marines running in formation.

The other thing we would do to piss the Army off was when marching to and from class, our Corporal marching us would see an Army vehicle approaching an intersection we were about to cross. Although we were far enough away to allow the vehicle to pass on through, he would yell out, "road gaurds, left and right flank, aaatacck!". The road gaurd would sprint ahead of the platoon, about 50 yds or so, go into the street, pop to parade rest and make those vehicles hit their brakes pretty hard and stop them. It would take another 20 seconds or so to just reach the road gaurds and when we did get there, the Corporal would do his version of "monkey drills" as we crossed the road. The whole time the driver is just fumming along with all the other vehicles who had to stop behind them. Great times!

Just remembered another pass time there. The enlisted club was the "1,2,3" club, the other was the Kaeson club. We were a good 5 or 6 blocks from the the 1,2,3 club. Someone would often run in through the rear barracks door at night after "lights-out" and yell "FIGHT! 123 CLUB!". That's all we needed to know, guys would be running out the back door, people jumping out of their racks and getting dressed as their running between the barracks. The Army would often try and corner a couple of Marines at the club and start something when they thought they had us out numbered, but when Marines come running down the street, over bushes and from behind buildings, all bets are off! Curse

Wait a sec, are you telling me that good ol' "Dragons" is no longer there? Gah! That was one of the few benefits out there. No strip club, no sleeve tattoos. What's next, tree hugging?

I don"t know what part you were on, I too went through in 81, and the megaphone did not exist, and the only way we ran was in formation. Getting the road guards out ahead of time is nothing more than a preventive hazard. If the marines ever came by our barracks I didn't know, I guess that was no concern of ours. definitely not mine. A marine artilleryman is no different from an army one, a 105 is a 105, an 8" is an 8". however falling from the sky and ready to fight upon hitting the ground is different.

I graduated Ft Sill in 1988 and went straight to 29 Palms (5/11). I think they are in Pulgas now where you will be. Enjoy the weather Marine...then go kick some Muslim ***.

WoW, I had heard they had torn down they strip clubs near the gates but I had heard that they moved them just outside of town. When I was there first was 1996 then again in 1998, I loved the Golden Dragon, lucky lady, And who can forget Suzy's best damn hair cut I mean masage I mean worst blow in the world. Actually the Haircuts were not that bad. We used to piss of the army by going to chow when it was their time and making them wait for us to finish. I was an 0844 with R 5/11 then with HQ 5/11 from 1996-1999, I went to Boot in 1995, then I did a stint in the CAANG as a mechanic. But I tell you I will never if I can help it go back to FT. Sill
