As an 0844 you will be working in the Fire Direction Center (FDC) at the Battery or Battalion level. The FDC is the brain of the unit. The forward observers will call in missions giving target location and description. The FDC will then compute the data needed to put on the guns. There are a lot of variables that can affect how the round travels, i.e. weather, powder temperature, condition of the guns, etc. After the data is computed, the info is then transmitted to the gun line. The forward observers will then call back with corrections so that the rounds will have effect on the target. Then, the FDC will recompute using the corrections from the forward observers. There are different types of missions that will be computed by the FDC, but this is a basic mission.
I don't know how the school is now, but even with the hasseles from the instructors I didn't think it was all that bad. I know after I left they started cracking down hard on the studants and imposing a lot of crazy rules. A lot of fun at a couple of bars in town even when the Army trainees were there.
