Quote: "The only drawback at this point is the SBP offset when one receives Dependency and Indemnity Compensation from the VA. [Note: The Senate has voted to end the SBP-DIC offset in its version of the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill. A House-Senate conference committee will decide whether that provision to eliminate the offset wins a spot in the final defense bill.]

It’s a mistake not to enroll in SBP. I am very grateful for what I receive. Thanks for your interesting articles."

Hopefully the SBP offset will pass Congress and be signed into law. In 1986 I pleaded with Senator John Glenn for the law to be introduced then, he said no. It is stealing in my opinion, to take a retirees money for a benefit and not deliver it.

I will cast no stones.

Why don't they make this a permanent benefit... for the widows...so they don't have to beg and scream for there rightful benefits, please give me a brake, who set this up, so that widows have to beg politicians and veteran organizations, get them benefits...only slaves to these people and organizations...

While it is great that the Senate approved stopping the offset for the SBP/DIC...so called Widow's tax...
HOWEVER, we can all see where the House stands on doing the right thing for all us widows!
My husband died of his 100% service-connected disabilities. The SBP that he bought and paid for....is now reduced by $1091 a month! And, then....is given back to me in the form of a DIC check. SBP is an insurance plan...No other agency anywhere...would ever be allowed to tap into an insurance plan and then give it back in another form.....DIC should NEVER be allowed to be attached to the SBP.
When my husband elected to buy and pay for SBP...no one told him that in the case of disability, there would be an offset....
SHAME ON THE GOVERNMENT FOR ONCE AGAIN TAKING AWAY FROM SOMEONE WHO GAVE THEIR ALL FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND THEN GETS SLAPPED IN THE FACE.
I heard an old saying, "they use ya, then dump ya when you can't do them any more good". Sounds like the U.S. Government in action.

WELL THEY DID IT AGAIN. For fourth time running, Congress eliminated the repeal of the offset. Called my Congressman's office and expressed my ire. Not that it does much good. But at least I vented and if enough maybe they would stop taxing the Survivors. Next month I will have paid in for 31 years and 10 months. It makes me mad that if my wife draws SBP They will tax her over a $1,000 and then give her a piddley $50. This is an insult to the veterans who die of service related causes. They say the repeal costs too much. They mean that it would mean they would have to start paying would is owed to the widows. It amounts to stealing.
