Is it just me, or has anyone else not seen any real change in how we conduct patrols since they were renamed as Maritime Observation Mission a while ago?
About half the "patrol" activity in my division is being reported as Safety Patrols (01a) and the other half as Safety and Security Patrols under 70b. Which is it supposed to be? Is there a difference between the two? Here is the abstract of a talk on this issue to be given at the upcoming NACON:

IMHO, MOM is a catchphrase, designed to help focus our attention on the task(s) at hand... MDA, MOM, or just 'paying attention'- I haven't figured out any way to discern between patrol types other than to report specific MDA site 'observations' as MDA mission-hours, rather than safety patrols such as we usually go out on. As far as the Observation part though, I hope that there aren't too many Auxpats out there that aren't Observing as they negotiate busy harbor traffic... I don't think I really answered your question, and to be honest I would like to hear a better answer if anyone else has one, regarding the determination of how missions are reported as MOM or not..? out. |

I generally report MOMS stuff when specifically doing Marine Safety related stuff. Safety patrols for most other stuff including interagency things... it just depends.

I think we all realize it was just a cosmetic change, but if that was the purpose why didn't they eliminate the "offensive" code we had been using? Why keep the old code, and apparently the old mission, if we're all supposed to be doing it differently?
Besides its just stupid to have one category be Saftey Patrols and the other be Saftey and Security Patrols. |

I had it explained as 01A Patrols were normal yachtie patrols for the station, and 70B patrols were for the SMRT augmenters..

Port Security guys.... I think they're actually called Sector Boat Forces now. Keep changing names.

Well, we don't have any of them in my Division, so that wouldn't explain why half our patrols are one and half are the other.

What's an SMRT augment patrol do exactly? Anything Trident-related?

The answer is real simple. 1. There are no rules on what mission number a coxswain uses on the 7030. The descriptions of the various patrol types on the 7030 are so broad that any patrol can fit under several of them. If you really want to drive the AuxData inputter nutz - use several codes for one patrol. 2. In the Bad Old Days, there was a problem with your annual currency maintenance hours if you used any code other then 01 - Safety Patrol. That problem existed under the old AuxMIS II and was fixed years ago. However, coxswains and crew have long memories - "once burned - twice shy" - and many refuse to use any code but 01. 3. Newer coxswains and/or coxswains interested in the Trident award need N number of hours a year for This message has been edited. Last edited by: FL51D7, |

It's a Marine Safety land patrol, so yep... it's a Trident type mission. It's also 96 hours per year for 4 years for the Trident requirements. |

As someone who deals with people filling in forms correctly as part of their day job, this situation would drive me absolutely bonkers if I had anything to do with it in the Aux (well, I guess I do since my crew hours show up in whichever code the coxswain wants to use).

...which is probably why I'm only the third(?) person in 1st Southern to start the program- and that was only AUX-MSAM... AUX-EK is next... wonder where I'll find the time.. |
