GJD quoting Eirikr1>Anyway, the term sinister merely means "left", not evil or perverted, underhanded or whatever. Someone learned just enough heraldry to think they knew what they were talking about and presto! another new urban legend...

geejaydee:> Hey, get a sense of humor! When I mentioned looking left as "sinister," . . .

eirikr1>actually I was accusing Truman of thinking he "knew what they were talking about and presto! another new urban legend...", not you.

GJD> On the other hand, the US Office of Heraldry does recognize somewhat of a connection, as this article illustrates:

You're quoting an (gasp) American reference as a source on Heraldry?? ROTFL!! ##that's** humour..

True sinister means left in Latin. The english word sinister means evil or perverted, underhanded or whatever and does derive from left handed because in battle as in boxing a left handed fighter was considered underhanded, sneaky evil etc. When a fighter trains to fight a left hander he has to take a different approach to the opponent. The same with swords. Thanks to Fr Kowsky from my Latin class in high school for that info.

And Dexter means right, as in hand, which means if you're ambidexterous you have 2 right hands. Big Grin

I thought I would contribute the patch I created for Dision 4, D8CR, "The Guardians of the Swamp". I originally designed it as a logo for the Division Publication "Fore & Aft". (The swamp scene was taken off of an oil painting done by my aunt.)
Regards,
WW

You can see a subdued image of the patch on the Division web site.

Bow - the link to "Fore & Aft" is broken on that web page.

Nice job on the patch.

Way back when, some members of my old flotilla were thinking of creating a unit patch. Some ideas for using it (as a fund-raiser) where on coffee mugs, ball caps (for 'social' not uniform wear), windbreakders etc. A fire destroyed the flotilla building that year and the project got put on the shelf.

Diraux West and the old Natioal testing Center has a patch....
Diraux West Patch - bottom of page

Currently the 'wild bunch' is using the patch, as it holds the copywright.

Thanks. When I saw that my attempt at inserting a picture of the patch with my post failed, I sent it to Gimpycoxn asking the he assist.

I guess it's a good thing the Fore & Aft link is broken - my last issue was in 2003...

The patch of Flotilla 3-5 from the 9th District. The patch doesn't state which 9th (C, E, or W) district.

The patch is for sale on eBay - I have no connection with the sale.
