I've been struggling with the decision whether or not to step up for my tri-annual coxswain recertification. I've been a coxswain for 7 years now and up until this mid-year last year I was fairly enthused about retaining the qualification. But the last six months or so have been a real struggle with dumping the whole deal.
As you all know, I have a fundamental disagreement with our local Division Ops direction. But I could live with that I guess and just do my patrols as the opportunity presents. But there just isn't any excitement or enthusiasm in me anymore and I don't know how to get it back. I discussed this with several experienced members I trust and they all said to at least keep the qualification current and see if my enthusiasm returned over the next year or so. So I will be going out next weekend to re-certify and hopefully retain my coxswain qualification. But rather than being all pumped up and wanting to be really ready, to me it feels like getting a tooth pulled and a waste of a whole precious weekend day. Both of my Auxiliary facilities (40 ft and 24 ft) are lapsed and I feel no urgency to get them re-inspected. I just got so tired of being told we were stealing from the USCG by trying to recover our consumables costs and how we needed to continue to make this harder and harder regards paperwork, crewing and ridiculous local regulations applied by ill-informed USCG command authorities. Ah well - We'll see what happens this year I guess. |

You might try a change in mission type or perhaps AOR. Perhaps a PATON mission once in a while or a Marine Event like a Regatta will break some of the boredom and give you some enthusiasm. Alternatively go for a change of surroundings and head to another AOR/station area and work some different sceanery. Best of luck. on edit I thought our Fuel/Oil and SAMA were from seperate accounts. So it's not like this money is coming from the local station. |

I agree that a change in mission might reinvigorate you. Watch out if you go to another AOR, you might have to gualify regarding knowledge of that AOR. All OP ORDER reimbursements come from CG funded Auxiliary sub-accounts. SAMA has a specified maximum dollar amount for the entire AUX, when that is reached no more SAMA $ for the fiscal year. The last two years saw additional mid-season appropriations for SAMA. |

Just remember that it won't be long before people holding positions change for some reason or another.
