We have received a draft Radar for Mariners course from an Auxiliarist in 5NR. I had sent him a copy of the book at the request of his DSO-PE, with a cover letter that as soon as we were done with the navigation course, we’d begin on the Radar course. Apparently this gentleman didn’t want to wait and got in touch with the author of the book and developed a course for us. I made an initial review of the course late last week and I feel there is material there that we can use and will save us a lot of development. I’ll be calling the gentleman to discuss his course. He has been buying books directly from the author, Mr. David Burch of Starpath School of Navigation. I need to make sure this gentleman understands that until we have an approved public education course, it is not authorized for him to teach it, buy books or encourage other flotillas to do so. Apparently he’s taught it at least two times as a “pilot”.
The now banned practice of member development is how all of the Aux's original PE and youth courses were developed. Next year is the 60th anniversary of the PE program - maybe it is the time to return to the roots of the program?
BTW - it sure sound like "E" took one of NACO's recommended books, "Mangagment Style of Attila The Hun" (or something like that), to heart.
In the interests of continuing the flagellation of deceased equines, whatever happened to the suit by National against Mel Kowal for developing Power Point presentations of the PE courses?
Members of the Wild Bunch got a lawyer, who I understand is still on retainer and let Nat know they would be in for a battle royal if they persisted.
Oh, it didn't help Nat's future case, that the Wild Bunch, especially Mel, had documents in their possession that showed Nat had requested Mel to produce the PowerPoints he did. Like another case some of us are familar with, once again Aux officers were caught lying about their actions and requests.
Although there were many incidents over the years, that was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back when it came to any working relationship between Nat and the Wild Bunch. At Wild Bunch insistence, anything Nat Aux wanted had to be at arms length and in writing before the Wild Bunch would work on it.
